Product Description

Looking for an identification guide to bees? Produced in conjunction with the invertebrate conservation charity Buglife, this much requested new 8-page chart shows 28 species of bee, most of which can commonly be seen flying in domestic gardens. As well as the 'Big Six' bumblebees, the chart includes representatives of mining bees, cavity-nesting bees and cuckoo bees. Silhouettes next to each image show the typical life-size for each species. Text on the reverse side includes a table, with full cross-referencing to the images, which gives further information on flight periods, distribution of each species in Britain, and useful pointers to help distinguish between similar-looking species.

This is a great, clearly laid out guide which you can pop in your back pack when out and about wildlife hunting. Loads of info to help you identify our little furry friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed! 12 Aug 2013

I try to create a bee-friendly garden, but until now could not identify the various strains of bee that visited. No longer! This excellent guide lists all the types which you are likely to see, and gives me a new interest, and a great deal of pleasure. As soon as I spot something new, I make a bee-line (no pun intended!) for my guide, and there it is,clearly illustrated. The folder style makes it quick and easy to use, too

Lots of good information. Well set out. My only complaint is they show the Buff-tailed and White-tailed as looking the same. There has to be some difference; Something indication to accompany the picture would help.

Another excellent 8 page pull out leaflet from the Field Studies Council which deals with 28 of vthe most common of species of bees from 250 species that occur in Britain.
Following an introduction there are sections on social bees/bumble bees, honey bees, solitary bees and cuckoo bees. There is a table of general remarks relating to a)when in flight b)distribution and status and c)identification notes.
The 28 illustrations give each image actual size and a colour representative which has been enlarged.
Very well presented and no doubt illustrates any bee you are ever likely to see.

I knew most of the garden visitors but I was interested in a few that turn up from time to time and this guide is perfect for that. Wish there was a smartphone version.
