With the opening "Guest House Paradiso Loungettes" you have a template for the whole album: a little profane language, a little light jazz and a little explosion or two of amazing invention. This is music that's intentionally and successfully funny, not just because we know Ritchie and Eddie are playing the fool around it. A track like "Gold Teeth Tango" starts out at a respectable pace, then becomes smirksome in its slow winding down--as if the power has been disconnected from a vinyl deck. Then there's the drunken mis-steps of "Happy Hour" which showcases musical sirens and the most extraordinary use of saxophone to suggest inebriation. The lounge jazz style dominates for the most part--a hangover from the comic duo's skits on Saturday Night Live--although there is the occasional interruption, such as the surprisingly tender string theme for "Miss Carbonara", or the piano solo of "Oh Love". The Bottom TV theme may be absent, but in this anarchic jazz form, Colin Towns has captured the spirit of the no-longer Young Ones perfectly. --Paul Tonks
