Product Description

Penguin Shorts are designed to fill a gap. Written to be read over a long commute or a short journey, they are original and exclusively in digital form. This is Colm Tibn's touching memoir.

A Guest at the Feast moves from the small town of Enniscorthy to Dublin, from memories of a mother who always had a book on the go to the author's early adulthood, from a love of literature to the influences of place and family. Tibn's captivating memoir is the story of a writer coming of age and his connections between home, work and love. It is a perfect gem of a book.

Fragments of youth 15 Dec 2011
By Eleanor TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In this beautifully written memoir, Tóibín presents the reader with episodes from his childhood and youth in Ireland. These non-chronological fragments together make up a satisfying whole, one which is a meditation on change and memory. Tóibín's recollections of his mother are particularly striking: her self-taught love of books, her recitations of poetry on a beach during a family holiday, and her place in a rapidly changing Ireland. I finished this book feeling cleansed and refreshed by Tóibín's masterly prose.

She was what most writers long for, and what most of us still write for: the ordinary reader, curious and intelligent and demanding, ready to be moved and changed, and believing still that the written word has all the power to make the deepest imprint on the private self. "e;

All of us have a landscape of the soul, places whose contours and resonances are etched into us and haunt us. If we ever became ghosts, these are the places to which we would return. "e;

My mothers mother believed that when someone in the family was ready to die, loud knocks would come to the door at night and the women in the family would hear these knocks. I remember my mother saying that she heard them the night before her mother died. That was 1960. And then she said that she had never heard the knocks since. This meant that when my father died in 1967 she didnt hear them. And she implied, when she talked about the knocks, that it was something which belonged to an old belief-system, something which had passed. "e;
