Review

"* 'Captivating... clever and economical story in which Dick King-Smith makes the most of his rare ability to inject his heroes with human strengths and weaknesses, whilst retaining their animal characteristics to the full' Books for Your Children * 'Dick King-Smith creates a complete world of humans and animals, and their complex relationships. There is humour and sadness. There is plenty of action. Jocelyn Wild's scribbly line drawings add to the general feeling of pace within the book. An entrancing and captivating read for younger children. The prolifl author has done it again... written a winner!' The Junior Bookshelf * 'A tale full of mishaps and coincidences... will appeal to a wide range of independent readers. The line drawings extend the humorous text beautifully' School Librarian * 'A hilarious new book for young readers by the ever-popular Dick King-Smith' Books for Your Children magazine"

Product Description

There are six puppies in the pet shop window; five posh pedigree puppies, and a scruffy little mongrel with a grand ambition - to be a guard dog. The other pups laugh at him. How can such a small, scruffy dog possibly expect to be bought to guard a home? His bark is the most horrible, earsplitting racket they have ever heard! Will the poor little guard dog be doomed to a lonely life in the Dogs' Home - or worse?

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tail, 17 Feb 2008

This review is from: The Guard Dog (Paperback)
The Guard Dog is written by famous award winning Dick King Smith. He wrote Babe, the Gallant Pig which won an award and was turned into a famous film which is really good. It is about a little dog without a home and with a squeaky, whiney, very annoying sound; when he does get one, he is sent to a Dogs Home, because of his horrible voice, where he can only stay for fourteen days; he does live happily ever after. I would rate this book 7/10 and I would recommend it to 6 - 8 year olds who like animals and happy endings for pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Guard Dog, 3 Oct 2007
We read this in our school Book Club. We are a group of Year 4 children. Words that we would use to describe this book include, "exciting, brilliant, action-packed, sad, fantastic, descriptive." The words jumped out of the book at us.
We would really recommend this book to children who are from 7 to 10 years old and who care about dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Guard Dog, 5 Dec 2002

This review is from: The Guard Dog (Audio Cassette)
I thought it was great, It was about a dog and he was always being picked on, by every other dog, he was a small dog no one saw him.
Then this little girl and her mum came in the dog shop. The girl saw the dog and she bought him. Then after a few weeks she sent the dog back because he always made loud noises. The shop keeper loved the dog.
My best part was when all the dogs told us what they are going to be,when they get a home. There was lots of funny bits, it made me feel happy.I did not like it when the dogs were picking on the small dog.

If I had to recommend the book to a friend, it will manly be children from 7 to 11,I learned that dogs can be a big handful.
Most of my friends might like it. It was really good!
