5.0 out of 5 stars A lesson in middle aged cynicism! GREAT STUFF! 17 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
A thoroughly inspired series telling it exactly how it is. Middle aged grumps may seem like a boring and irritating subject but nothing could be further from the truth.

Hilariously funny observations on life and the human condition makes this title essential viewing. The grump of your house will, like me, repeatedly say "Too right" again and again and again when listening to the pearls of wisdom delivered on this disc. The package also includes an extended Christmas episode that really echoes what we all secretly feel about the forced jollity of the season - whcih nowadays starts shortly after August Bank Holiday!

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Total Grumpiness 5 July 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is without a doubt the best of the grumpies, Grumpy Old Men series 1 has the best bunch of old gits (I could be one too), giving vent to all the things that get them down in a normal day in their lives, add to that Geoffery Palmer's wonderful voice overs and you have a recipe for complete and total must see television. Forget Grumpy Old Women which is good, I'm not being sexist honestly, but Grumpy Old Men always seem to be in far more pain with the world around them. What worries me and my wife is that I am one too!

5.0 out of 5 stars The John Peel Show 30 July 2009
By Anna VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
He's not even in it a huge amount, but every single thing he says is drenched in Absolute Coolness and it's wonderful being able to pretend he is still here.

Grumpy old men, contrary to popular belief, apparently include 30 year old women - certainly this one. As they speak, you find yourself agreeing with everything they say; all their irritants are entirely valid, and they are wholly correct in their simmering fury. Except they inject their grumpery with lashings and lashings of laugh out loud funniness. Will Self (frequently unlikeable in so many ways) is a bonafide genius with words; Bill Nighy is a laconic wonder; Bob Geldof drops the worthiness and becomes a supremely enjoyable scowl on frowny legs and, of course, there's Sir Peel who can do no wrong.

They are joined by a legion of grumpy middle-aged men, all of whom are disappointed that it's not how Tomorrow's World promised it would be. They grumble about yoot speak, coffee bars, celebrity culture, politics and broken promises, technology, traffic, children, pretentious food, women who wear very little then frown upon your ogling their norks... on and on it goes, for 2 and a half wonderful hours. And that doesn't include the hour-long Christmas extra.

For this one, Jeremy Clarkson has joined their ranks as they rant about carol singers, the always-debacle Christmas lights, shopping... all the while, puffing furiously on cigarette after cigarette.

You would think it would be interminably depressing watching a bunch of old goats raving for 3 and a half hours. But, in fact, it's thoroughly joyous and life-affirming. It's always comforting knowing you're not alone in your catalogue of grievances but, more than that, they're just jolly good company.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! 7 Jan 2011

If you've seen the television show you'll know what you're in for! A hilarious over-view of life today by well-known artistes of 'a certain age'. If you're irritated by all those automated telephone calls, baffled by i-pods, sickened by body-piercing and get all hot-and-bothered about so-called 'customer services' YOU'RE NOT ALONE!! A brilliantly-funny DVD.

Great entertainment AND many a true word spoken in jest !!! I agree with Most if not all of their Grumbles - society has slipped badly back since the 60's

5.0 out of 5 stars Grumpy Old Men! 17 Sep 2010

Brilliant, funny, true and just the way things are. Being in the correct age category of a Grumpy Old Man 35-54, I can confirm that I am infact one because I agree with everything that's said on here.

It's not so much a cynical view of the way life is but a real reflection of society these days from annoying answering machines to singers. At times there are laugh out loud comments made. I'll be ordering Grumpy Old Women soon.

Interesting series. Essentially this is a comfort DVD because if you've ever felt that the world is moving on at a pace that doesn't concern you, or is a more of a world designed for people who must think very different from yourself then you'll be pleased to know that you're in famous company, some of the very celebrities we hold on a pedestal find our modern society just as irrational as you might and now with this series their views are presented as more sensible than the mainstream ones. But as a still relatively young person I did cringe a little at just how deep the stubborn ludditeyness seems to go for some people, I mean modern technology is supposed to be fun, not work, but even so I could never stop empathising with the talking heads at any point.
