Amazon.co.uk Review

A charming animated treat, based on the much-loved character dreamed up by Julia Donaldson, The Gruffalo’s Child is the second time her creation has been brought to the screen. From a narrative standpoint, though, it’s pretty much a standalone story, with no foreknowledge required, that you get here.

The story picks up a few years after the previous adventure, The Gruffalo, and as the title suggests, things have moved on. For The Gruffalo now has a daughter, and this time, it’s she who heads off on a whole new adventure, albeit one very much in keeping with the style and energy of the first.

Delightfully animated, with a real sense of detail, and with a strong voice cast featuring the likes of Helena Bonham-Carter, Tom Wilkinson and John Hurt, The Gruffalo’s Child is a wonderful family treat. It’s rare to find a production that can appeal to different generations so effortlessly, but this might be it. Funny, exciting, and not outstaying its welcome, what’s particularly impressive is how closely it retains the feel, warmth and look of the source material, too.

Its core audience will remain the young, as you might expect, but the wise casting, and the production values, are just a few of the reasons why the proverbial children of all ages might appreciate it, too. As good as The Gruffalo? Perhaps not. But The Gruffalo’s Child runs things close, and is set to be enjoyed time and time again. --Jon Foster

I watched last year's The Gruffalo with my young sons because I had been reading it to them for months. I was instantly both surprised, delighted and charmed by it's authentic take on the story, and by how they had so carefully and cleverly added some extra fun bits into it that probably only the parents would notice. And, happily, the same can be said for The Gruffalo's Child. The story itself is ever so slightly less captivating than The Gruffalo, but the animated version of The Gruffalo's Child easily redeems any lack in the storyline. As an adult, watching it with my wife and 3 young boys, I found myself laughing out loud, smiling and admiring the workmanship of the animators. This is a video that will get re-played many times over. Highly recommended, and an absolute must if you like The Gruffalo.

The Gruffalo's Child 26 Dec 2011

Made by the same team who produced The Gruffalo and with an excellent cast, including John Hurt, Robbie Coltrane, Tom Wilkinson and Helena Bonham Carter, this is a joy to watch. As in "The Gruffalo" the story is told through the squirrel to her babies who see some footprints they think are belong to a gruffalo, but which are too small. They do, in fact, belong to the Gruffalo's child and we are taken on a trip back to the deep, dark woods, where the Gruffalo warns her not to go because of the big, bad mouse. 'The snow fell fast an the wind blew hard. "I'm not scared," said the Gruffalo's child.' Clutching her toy stick man, the Gruffalo's child creeps into the deep, dark woods and meets the snake, fox and owl before finally meeting the mouse. Julia Donaldson has written fantastic, and memorable, characters and they are done justice in this brilliant adaptation, which stays true to the story. My kids loved this and I am sure yours will too.

This is the quintessential DVD of this century!!!! The story is FABULOUS, the characters are wonderful! There is lots to learn from well in this movie. A kid cult classic that also appeals to adults that still possess a wonderous child-like nature and and an eye for fine detail....... If you are having to read this review prior to purchasing I'm wondering where have you been hiding to not know about The Gruffalo. ..? Buy this as a gift for your children , then sit down together with them and ENJOY!!!
