The Gruffalo, illustrated by Axel Scheffler, is now a children's classic and publishing phenomenon; celebrating 15 years in 2014, selling over 3 million copies worldwide, was voted Great Britain's favourite bedtime story on BBC Radio 2 and was adapted and broadcast as an animation on BBC 1 on Christmas Day 2009. The Gruffalo's Child and Room on the Broom are now also films, with Room on the Broom shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2014. Julia Donaldson's most recent books with Axel Scheffler include Superworm (2012), Highway Rat (2011), Tabby McTat (2010), Stick Man (2009) and Tiddler (2008).

Julia Donaldson has also published work with David Roberts, Nick Sharratt, Emily Gravett, Rebecca Cobb, and Lydia Monks. Her collaboration with Lydia Monks began in 2003, with the first collection of Princess Mirror-Belle stories. The fabulously glittery Sugarlump and the Unicorn is their sixth, and most recent, picture book collaboration. She also writes poems, plays, songs and fiction for older children and, together with her husband Malcolm, has performed her wonderful stage shows all over the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pointless cash in 1 Mar 2005
Format:Board book
The Gruffalo is a wonderful book, in my opinion the best children's book of recent years. I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
However, this book seems to be a rather pointless cash in. On the plus side it is the full Gruffalo story with all the original illustrations and each illustration is also a jigsaw.
However, jigsaw books are a bit difficult to read as the jigsaw pieces tend to fall out. The only way to read the book is on the floor or at a table. This works best if the child can read. However, the jigsaws are only 12 pieces each and the illustrations are so rich that they are very easy to complete - they would be within the capabilities of many two-year olds.
My son was bought this book as a present (we already own a copy of the book) and after 10 minutes of interest the book has been consigned to a shelf where I suspect that it will stay.

5.0 out of 5 stars So far, so good 5 May 2009
Format:Board book
We hadn't read Gruffalo before getting this book, and the only previous book by this team is Smartest Giant in Town (which we like). We actually got this for our two-year-old in preparation for a plane trip back to the States, and it did its job.
We wanted this particular version because our girl loves her puzzles, and this is kind of a classic over here on top of that. (Nobody in the US had heard of it, though everyone thought the Gruffalo looked like a beast from Where The Wild Things Are.) She loves the book, the puzzles were just her speed, and the pieces are staying in the pages so far.
No regrets whatever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful story 18 Aug 2006
Format:Board book
What a wonderful book, The jigsaws fit tight so that they don't fall out whilst you're reading the story. My 4yr old cant get enough of it and thankfully I don't get bored reading it. A joy, lots of fun

1.0 out of 5 stars Why not get the soft back book? 15 Jun 2013
By Caterina VINE VOICE
Format:Board book
If you are thinking of buying the jigsaw version of the Gruffalo, or indeed any other jigsaw version of a successful children's book, as a present for a child other than your own (which is the market at which I suspect that these books are aimed) then I would urge you to take your money and instead buy a normal copy of the book, either a soft back or a board book.

Over the years we've been given several of these jigsaw books, including this one, by kind relatives and they have quickly been consigned to the limbo of unwanted toys. The jigsaw pieces are thin and flimsy and far too difficult for small hands with limited co-ordination to fit together. (Obviously how co-ordinated your child is will depend on the child, but I have found my under 5s unable to manage such flimsy pieces.) The pieces bend very easily. Children rip them out and can't put them in again - cue lost pieces, and pieces scattered all over the place. If you stand the book up on a shelf, then when you take it down and open it up, the pieces at that page often fall out. If you try to tuck it into a front facing bookcase like the Tidy Books ones, the book is too fat for comfort. Its an appallingly ungrateful thing to say, but my heart just sinks whenever we receive one of these books. I just know they'll end up largely unused, and causing frustration when they are used.

The Gruffalo is a lovely book - why not just buy an ordinary copy? That way you'll save some money, too, that you can spend on an ordinary copy of another book for the under 4 age group - perhaps The Tiger Who came to Tea, or We're Going on a Bear Hunt. (By the way I wish I could review the Bear Hunt jigsaw book - I am not sure why this is shown as unpublished, and so unreviewable, when I've had a copy of it for a month.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! 4 Dec 2009
By Ems mum
Format:Board book|Verified Purchase
My daughter loves the gruffalo so when I saw this I thought she would love it. It is a beautifully made hardback version of the book with a large jigsaw on each page. Looks as if you have paid a fortune for it.

As it's a christmas pressie can't tell you at this stage how it fairs in 2 year old hands but it certainly looks a fab pressie.

Good item.
Engaged my grandson soon as he opened it.
The idea of the puzzles being in the book is
good as the pieces are less likely to get lost.
