Book Description

All hail Grubtown - where mayhem rules the day and exceptional silliness is the way of life! Philip Ardagh is back to tell more tales of grubbiness and chaos in his brilliant and whacky series, perfect for fans of Mr Gum and Horrid Henry.

Product Description

Coming a month before the special World Book Day publication is the fourth instalment of the silliest series on record:

As eye-witness Beardy Ardagh reports, when famous film star Tawdry Hipbone visits Grubtown for the world premiere of her latest movie, For the Love of Ducks II, Mayor Flabby Gomez couldn't be more excited but, as usual, nothing goes to plan. Miss Hipbone's dog, Snooks, is snatched by a low-flying pelican, and it's a race against time to find him, in a rescue attempt involving Grubtown's usual ragbag of bungling buffoons.

I purchased this book for my 8 year old to read on his own or for me to read as a story to my 6 and 8 year old boys.We had already read one or two of the other Grubtown tales, so I knew my 8 year old quite likes them.

Grubtown is a fictional community where the author- Phillip Ardagh claims to live, known to the locals as "Beardy Ardagh" (on account of the beard!)
The stories focus on the various characters in the town and interesting events that happen there.
All the characters have cool names (which are appreciated on another level, by an adult reader) eg Mango Claptrap, Acrid Scorn, Grabby Hanson, Tawdry Hipbone etc. The thread of the story is usually quite simple. This book is about a little dog being stolen from an aging actress, by a passing pelican at a town event and the efforts of the other characters including the towns police and the very able younger "heroes" Jilly Cheeter and Mango Claptrap, to solve the mystery and save the day! From reading some of the other Grubtown tales, there is usually a mystery to solve and a bit of comedy along the way!
Phillip Ardagh writes in a very down to earth conversational way, and really builds up a good picture of the characters and I would say that the characters are what makes the book really.
The conversational style sometimes goes off at a tangent..as conversations do! so that can be a challenge for the younger reader to keep to the thread of the story. As an adult reading to a child, it makes it an interesting read and as I've said you can appreciate adult humour , irony etc in the tale, much as I think adults can appreciate "The Simpsons" on a different level to a child/young person.

Would it appeal to girls as well? I'm a girl so yes! And as the heroine Jilly Cheeter is a girl then I would say so from that point of view as well..but its a comedy/mystery story so no ballerinas or fairies/ponies! So a good series of books to keep the balance!
