Mutants aren't new to me, but M. Leon Smith took me beyond mere action heroes to a remarkable set of characterizations. Young Lydia is touching, her humanity interupted by mutation. Frank is a Hero, both human and mutant. Lydia pines for her puberty; she gets her growth more suddenly than imagined--and in different ways. Frank gets a demotion. Both events make me want MORE.

A few months ago I read the first installment of Blue Jackets and have been eagerly awaiting the second part ever since. I was not disappointed. This installment opened up the world nicely, adding more characters and more tensions between the ones we already have come to care about.

I did miss Tim but the epilogue left me looking forward to the next installment.

Smith gives the reader another tale of people with super powers. The heroine is a girl with problems. She is transformed - she gains super powers and a new body. The pattern is the same for all - a fantasy. A young person has medical or personal problems. They escape their problems and disability. They are transformed into a hero with super powers.
The story is great fun for kids of all ages - 8 to 80. We all can put on our capes and leotards! Up, up and away! Bravo!
