In 1989 scientists make a breakthrough using parasites to make super humans, but the parasites start feeding off the host from the inside. All infected people are killed off and the experiments stop. Fast forward to present day, 4 people arrive on the island where it took place, as somebody died and left them a house. They're cleaning up the house in preparation of it being sold, whilst there the parasites are on the loose again.
The film started off reasonably well, it had an enjoyable title sequence that quickly shows events that have happened. After 15 minutes or so, the film starts to go downhill leading to a ridiculous ending and to be honest I couldn't wait for it to finish. I don't know why I keep doing it to myself, but in my never ending search to find great low budget horror movies, I come across films like this and 20-30 minutes in, I know it won't improve but I finish anyway. I was almost to the point of self loathing by the time i'd wasted another hour on this.
The story has been done before, I suppose Slither is the easiest film to make a comparison with. Slither is 100 times better than this, that has good acting, directing, effects and humour, non of which Growth has. I thought the only decent thing in Growth was the acting, but even that is a bad thing as the film feels like a cheesy 80's film and probably would have benefited having fun, hammy acting in it.
There are some fight scenes in this, where the action is slowed down in a sort of Matrix style and it looks appalling, I assume the film didn't have a fight choreographer, because if it did i'm sorry to say he should never work on another movie. The effects start of okay, but as the movie progresses and they attempt to be more ambitious, they just get worse to the point of mediocrity.
For a film that started off well, I couldn't believe how bored I was by the time it finished. Considering it was filmed on a very small budget of $300,000, they did a decent job despite the fact i've seen much better on smaller budgets. If your a fan of Slither, I doubt it but you may enjoy this.
