This is an exhilerating read, both as the personal account of the development (particularly as an intellectual) of the author during his teens, and as a vivid account of English social history during and immediately after WW2. It has two main components - and very different ones at that: life at home in London and life at his boarding school, Christ's Hospital, Horsham. It is very well written, with a powerful recall of the key moments in his life. Equally enjoyable for those who lived through those times, and for those curious to know how it felt like then.
