This is an exhilerating read, both as the personal account of the development (particularly as an intellectual) of the author during his teens, and as a vivid account of English social history during and immediately after WW2. It has two main components - and very different ones at that: life at home in London and life at his boarding school, Christ's Hospital, Horsham. It is very well written, with a powerful recall of the key moments in his life. Equally enjoyable for those who lived through those times, and for those curious to know how it felt like then.

An engaging memoir 9 Nov 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a frank and absorbing account of a childhood disrupted by war and saved by a remarkable intelligence and fortuitous social circumstance. A story told in detail with unusual perspicacity. I hope there is a sequel.

Gowing up in a war 1 Oct 2009
Format:Paperback
As a contemporary of Bryan Magee at Christ's Hospital I was obviously interested in what he had to say about life at that boarding school at that time. With remarkable recall he paints an extremely accurate, fair and evocative picture of the ups and downs of life in that wonderful establishment during the Second World War.

What I did not expect was an incredibly moving story of his personal development throughout childhood with all the problems of family and being evacuated from London. His discovery of music and theatre as he matured was equally fascinating. Anyone picking up this book will be enthralled by it.
