Product Description

Review

"'... a classic... he caught both the people and the place... and there are passages which stand comparison with Zola and Gorky. The Observer" --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

"Growing Up in the Gorbals" describes Ralph Glasser's impoverished childhood and adolescence in Glasgow's slum tenements. "Gorbals Boy at Oxford" takes him, with a scholarship, to Oxford; into the army; and back to wartime Oxford. With "Gorbals Voices", "Siren Songs", Ralph Glasser concluded his brilliant autobiographical sequence: venturing in to the perplexing, wayward world of postwar London. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

A memoir, despite its setting, not primarily about the Gorbals or even Scottish experiences, but about the nature and effect of social decline and degeneration. More importantly than that, however, this work represents a profound lesson in terms of the individual's capacity to achieve great things with the right mindset. Truly great literature.

(Read Jeff Torrington's 'Swing hammer swing!' for a similar thematic concern. Really, do ...)

Format:Hardcover
An extraordinary book from an adult's understanding, as well as boyhood perspective, of poverty-stricken and problematic family life in the Gorbals of Glasgow. This very well-written book descriptively defines friendships, family situations, political philosophies and working environment during the period. It is written with both a profound and generous understanding of personal circumstances. I went back to Scotland searching antique bookshops with success for this book. which is now out of print.

if you like reading about the old Gorbals this is fine but also try colin macfarlane's The Real Gorbals Story who brings the 1960s Gorbals alive.
