4.0 out of 5 stars Not what i expected!, 14 Mar 2007
By A Reader (Oxford) - See all my reviews
I was told this book was a chick lit. So i settled down to enjoy a quick read about a woman reliving her teens, commenting on the eighties fashion and music and after a heartwarming moral at the end of the story, would return back to her normal thirty-something state.

I was wrong. This is a much deeper, philosophical story which proves that nothing is ever guaranteed. The aspects of time travel, however, were dealt with in a witty way, making the book less serious.

Overall, an interesting read. Very different to anything i've ever read. And the ending did have me in hysterics! Just dont let the cover fool you!

4.0 out of 5 stars Growing Up Again, 15 Mar 2007
By A Reader (London) - See all my reviews
I think it would be a slight over-statement to compare this book to The Time Traveller's Wife because it isn't exactly on the same literary and emotional level. But with regards to subject matter and topic, it definitely has very strong similarities. Whilst the cover portrays a fun, light, Maria Keyes-esque type book, it really does offer a lot more than that. It's a quirky yet serious novel about time travel, fate, free will and choice. How much choice do we really have over our lives? Would we make the same choices again if we could go back in time? And once you've made a choice, is there a way out of it? How much of our life is self-fulfilling prophecy?

It was great to read a chick lit (if you can call it that) with a bit more substance and heart. This book is certainly very different to anything I've read for a while so I would definitely recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A second childhood?, 10 Sep 2006
By Alison Kerridge (Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, U.K) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Growing Up Again (Hardcover)
Stuck in an un-happy marriage, and fast approaching 40, Janie Lawson's life isn't exactly as she had once imagined it to be. But on the day she plans to radically change her life, she wakes up to find she has been transported back in time to her teens. Feeling she's been given a second chance, Janie sets about trying to ensure that her life plans out the way she wants it to, and try to stop disasters she knows will happen in the future, such as 9/11.
This is a great novel which will have you in tears of laughter and sadness. It also sends out a clear message that nothing in life is guaranteed, even when you're sure you know what is about to happen.
I loved this book, especially the rather unexpected ending!
