Pleased to see that Cherry Red have got round to reissuing these early Brilliant Corners EP's and mini albums. This compilation includes their Fruit Machine EP and Growing Up Absurd and What's In A Word mini albums. Growing Up Absurd shows the Corners moving away from their early psychobilly garage band sound of their early single on ss20 "She's Got Fever" into more Velvet Underground territory. The lyrics are exceptional - Check "A Girl Called Property" for an example of Davey Woodward's lyrical genius as he rails against the demands of a wealthy girlfriend - This is theme he returns to, his love of and distate for posher girlfriends. The Fruit Machine EP is brillaint and shows the band broadening their sound through the addition of a trumpet player. Jim's Room tells the story of Jim whose room has a circle with an A in the middle and who gets wrecked on Tuesdays (Signing on day!). The music is uplifting despite the lyrics dealing with the seamier realistic side of life and is full to brimming with youthful energy. "What's In A Word" includes the Brilliant Corners C86 era hit "Brian Rix" a song all about fumbling around on a sofa at your girlfriends parents house and feeling absurd as your trousers end up round your ankles. If you do not own this buy it now - This is classic brisitsh indie music.

I was lucky enough to see the BCs several times during my teens, and even back then in my youthful naivety I didn't understand why The Housemartins and The Smiths had top 10 hits and the Brill Corns didn't. I always felt frustrated for Davey Woodward- playful tortured artist as he was at times, there is no denying he wrote/writes great British observational indiepop songs. I have a very scratched up copy of "Whats In A Word" so it was a thrill to hear the songs again in digital clarity. One slight annoyance, the mastering for the "Growing Up Absurd" tracks could be better. Vocals are very syballant and on "Southern Mystery" the song actually slows down very noticably in 2 spots. I'm not sure where this comes from, as my treasured vinyl version doesn't wobble so. But I'm not complaining too much. Because if everything was perfect in this world the Brilliant Corners would have been huge. Fanatstic songs, and a chance for the rest of the world to catch up.

This is one of the greatest bands from Bristol, amazing compilation of the finest music they made. It's well known that others like The Pop Group and The Blue Aeroplanes are jealous of their fine work. I discovered them from a recommendation from a guy living in the ural mountains, russia who sent me an MP3 of this LP.
