5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic read, 26 Nov 2008
By I. Hussain "Stiqs" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a classic book, beautifully written, with the wonderfully eccentric central character of Aunt Dymphna. When I first read this, aged 9 or 10, it felt like being taken into another world - magical, remote, wild, lyrical. Aunt Dymphna swoops into the narrative like a crotchety, unfathomable crow, never scared to let the children know what she thinks of them, crabby and difficult yet with a tender heart. Wonderful lunacy and Edward Lear poems, charming line illustrations, and a real sense of poignancy throughout. The ending made me cry. I've subsequently found my childhood copy of the book, and to my immense relief it still read as wonderfully as I remembered it as a child. Unmissable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Childrens Classic that adults will love, 7 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Growing Summer (Paperback)
I first read this book when I was eight years old. Almost by mistake yet since that first moment I have read it again and again and now as an adult I still find it facinating. This book is pure escapism it makes you wish you were the children sea fishing and surrounded by Edward Lear. The book also shows that children can act as adults and make decisions for themselves when left to themselves. My favorite character in this book was the childrens Aunt the first time you read the book she seems made yet the more intamate you become with the book you realise how sane she actually is . This book is marvellous and how any person can go through their lives without reading it is beyond me

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is a must for children & adults alike., 26 Feb 2001

This review is from: The Growing Summer (Paperback)
As a child, this book was read to our class when I was at Junior School. As soon as I was earning a living, I bought a copy of this book for myself. It is a book I have read over and over and often recommend to others. All the characters are so realistic, the adventure the children have is wonderful.
