About the Author

My mother blessed me with a great passion for nature, particularly flowers. We lived in Southern Arizona with intensely hot summers and no sprinkler system, yet my mother was determined to have flowers around us. Rather than a flower garden, she choose to grow her flowers in pots, particularly the hardy geranium, which she gently cared for day-after-day. Under her care, they flourished. As a young married woman living in California, a more temperate climate, I began to surround my own home with flowers - agapanthus, impatiens, primroses, bougainvillea, sweet alyssum, etc. Digging in the dirt and watching the flowers bloom gave me a special kind of pleasure. Even though I loved roses, I always thought they would be far too difficult to grow, so I never tried. Finally a few years ago, I took the plunge and have never looked back. My yard is now filled with roses. My first book, Growing Roses, Everything You Need to Know, and More . . . is my way of sharing with you what I learned from my experience. The main lesson is, that growing roses is not difficult. I hope that you will give yourself the gift of a rose garden, which can be nothing more than a single bush that will give you pleasure day-after-day, as my mother's potted plants gave her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical and readable book 6 Oct 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a small and comprehensive book which really does give all the information needed to grow roses well. Within minutes I realised that I'd just planted a rose in the wrong place, so it'll have to be moved. Fortunately, the book also tells you how to successfully plant a rose so that it has the best chance of prospering.

The book is well structured and advice, often given in bullet-point form, is easy to read and follow. Planting, nurturing, disease and pest control, and pruning are all covered in a way that makes the whole thing seem so much easier than some gardening books I've read.

I like the additional chapter on drying roses. I'd never thought of doing that before, but some are so beautiful that I might give it a try.

Open this book and you can smell the roses!
Roses are the one flower, where the perfume lingers in your mind.
I know the musk of yellow roses, how pink is sweet and distinctive, the berry
and chocolate of French roses. For me roses remind me of family. Roses are the symbol
of love and passion. The author shares her love and passion of these beautiful blooms,
That's why I love this book. It gives you the confidence to grow roses in your own garden.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book comes up smelling of roses :-) 28 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book may be small, but the amount of information crammed into it has is impressive. "Growing Roses - Everything You Need to Know and More. . ." covers choosing the right roses for your garden, appropriate soil types, common rose diseases and pests, and pruning.

I recommend this book to novice gardeners, because the terms are easy to understand. I myself am a novice gardener. Before reading Susan Sumner's book, I already thought of giving up gardening. I've tried growing roses before, but the gardening books that I've read are just too technical, or they lack information about the basic things on the assumption that the reader already knows about them. After reading Growing Roses, I realized that the basics should be taken seriously. Today, I have 2 rose shrubs in my backyard and I'm just eagerly waiting for the buds to bloom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Gardening Time Yet But .. 5 Oct 2012
By Bob Pardue - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Author Susan Sumner has some wonderful tips for growing roses in store when the time comes! The book really captures just about everything you always wanted to know about this romantic plant and I'm sure you'll appreciate her frankness and instructive style.

But wait!! Did I just discover a section for cold climate roses? Yes, I did!!

So, my waiting is over. I'm going to dig (excuse the pun) right down and get in the dirt; plant my roses and, with Susan's help, watch 'em grow!

You should too - this gardening tips book is a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Knockout Roses Are Cheering 9 Oct 2012
By Jessica Sherwood - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The author of ''Growing Roses - Everything You Need To Know'' mentions that roses are the most beloved flowers of all time. She won't get any argument from me because I love, love, love roses. But I've had really bad luck with growing them. It seemed as though every week there was a new problem: aphids, black spot, mildew. Then I found "knockout" roses, which are mentioned in this book. True, they're no good as cut flowers and I can't smell a darned thing, although 'Growing Roses' says they absolutely do have a faint smell. But knockouts have one huge advantage: you can practically throw them on the ground and they will grow gloriously, producing blooms for months.

There is a ton of helpful information in this book, including how to plant, fertilize and even dry roses. It's already helped me because my roses have gotten so tall that they definitely need cutting. But the author says not to cut them back during the fall (it's October as I write this) because my beautiful plants need 'sacrifice' protection over the winter. She also included a wonderful recipe to boost my roses in the spring so that they will continue to give pleasure for many years.
