5.0 out of 5 stars a lovely warm, gentle story, 12 April 2006
This review is from: Growing Good (Paperback)
My daughter was bought this as a present, probably because we have an allotment and the story is about some families living in inner city flats who create allotments on some waste ground left when a factory is demolished. It's a lovely vibrant, colourful book with a warm-hearted and unusual story. I like the theme about creating something beautiful out of something ugly and making something for the community out of something that was a blight on community life - I hope that doesn't make it sound dull or turgid because it isn't at all!

I also like the fact that it's not about a "traditional" white, middle class family as so many children's books are. The characters are different races and the main boy character is looked after by his grandfather while his mother is at work. It's also nice to be able to show children something where there is a great sense of being part of a community.

Apart from all this, even if you are a white middle class family with no interest in the wider community and hate gardening, it's a good story and nicely illustrated too!

This review is from: Growing Good (Paperback)
This book tells about both the pleasures of living in a community and making it richer, and about dealing wisely and kindly with (not so) faceless bureaucracy, and with the odd contrarian in our midst. Good pictures too - I found on each reading, my eye was caught by a different detail.
