DVD Description

Grow Your Own is a warm-hearted British comedy with a host of well-known British stars. A refugee family is given a plot to help rehabilitate their traumatized father. At first they are met with suspicion by the men who have worked the gardens for years but eventually they are accepted by their united love of making things grow.

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 5.1 ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Deleted Scenes, Featurette, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, Trailer(s), SYNOPSIS: British director Richard Laxton's allegorical ensemble comedy Grow Your Own concerns a most unusual therapy doled out to local refugee families in London: an analyst allots a parcel of land to each group, and asks its kinfolk to farm vegetables there. Naturally, a myriad of complications arise - from a young man named Kenny (Alan Williams, who refuses to comply with the given ordinance and paint his hut red, to Miriam (Diveen Henry), a widow who believes that the spirit of her late husband has returned in the form of one of the gardeners, Little John (Eddie Marsan), to a Chinese immigrant, Kung Sang (Benedict Wong) whose wife died when packed into a shipping container. Matters grow increasingly sticky and complex for everyone when a cell phone company turns up and insists on planting an obtrusive mast in the middle of the land. ...Grow Your Own

Heartwarming 3 Feb 2008
Format:DVD
The story centres around the allotment and the characters therin. Along come a 'family' of asylum seakers who have been given a plot to assist with the rehab of one of the main characters. This causes a mild panic in the allotment with the regulars coping with this in differing ways. You do want the main character to come good and he does! Along the way there is some great acting, some tearful moments and some really touching performances and a big dose of humour (one or two mild expletives). A typical british film about how people live their introverted allotment life and how they cope with change. I watched this with my young family and we all loved it. I was the only one who cried though! A feel good film.

Sweet story 7 Jun 2008
By Wyvernfriend VINE™ VOICE

When I saw the trailer for this on another DVD I decided to get it out and was I glad. I wasn't sure about it initially but it turned into a real heartwarming and funny story of people, their prejudice and ways in which people can grow.

The story centers around a set of alotments and a group of immigrants who find themselves given alotments as a way of getting them over trauma and integrated into society. Along the way there's racism, love, laughter and sadness and it really dragged me in.

I would recommend it to anyone.

A heart warmer. 16 Feb 2008
By L. W. Newton TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

We all loved this film, even my 15 year old Nephew!!

Grow You Own is a real heart warmer, with good old British humour and some very serious points as well.

A great story line that shows some of the ignorance that can blight old blighty, but also shows some of the strengths as well.

Rent it, you won't regret it.

great fun but don't forget the Kleenex
I loved this film - yes, lots of cliches, and loads of set pieces, but who cares? I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had tears streaming down my face at the sad bit and went to bed happy! Read more

A little gem
As an allotment holder, this film really has it all. Lots of big, global issues played out against the backdrop of a sternly run allotment society - not very subtle, but very... Read more

Sweet but not a classic
A nice watch, especially a Sunday afternoon when it's too rainy to be out in your own garden. But it's no real classic, and certainly not a Friday night film watch. Read more
