Product Description

Review

Carefully defining such differences as goals versus intentions and business versus personal, Chapin draws the reader up through successive layers of consciousness, moving steadily toward that crucial juncture where "what you do"and"how you think"are absolutely in harmony. It is right at this point where you can grow your business, just as if you were tending a garden. There s no mystery to the process, just a vigilant management of many tasks, all of which work together toward simple sustainability."

Format: Paperback
This book is the follow up from the successful The Handmade Market Place. Where that book was aimed at people new to selling handmade this one is more about achieving long term business goals. The main focus of the book is on business planning, and writing a business plan.

Most traditional business planning books and guides aren't always particularly relevant to people running handmade businesses, who often have very low, or no start up costs and often don't involve renting premises etc like larger businesses. This book starts by getting you focused on the aims of your business and working out what your goals are. The latter half of the book is more focused on the sections covered in a business plan and how they apply to a creative business. There are excecises throughout to get you thinking about how what you have just read applies to your business. The information is broken down into small manageable chunks, not big blocks of text which makes it easy to dip in and out of, or to digest if reading all in one go.

The author also calls on her network of craft business owners to get tips, advice, case studies and motivating messages from them which are interspersed throughout the book. This book would be very useful to anyone running a creative business, more so than your traditional business guides.

I bought this book at the embryonic stages of starting my business and it has been a brilliant tool. Not only does it cover elements such as marketing and 'number crunching' but it also makes you think how you, as an individual, can manage the business with an every day family life and how much time you can give it. It is easy to read, absorb and refer back to. It's not full of a load of technical waffle you don't need. I would highly recommend this book to any one starting out a small business. I consider it my new "business bible" and am sure I will be referring back to it for some time to come.

I bought Kari's first book and read it cover to cover, when this was released I was really excited as I'd reached that next stage where I wanted to grow my business.
As a creative person I found the design and layout of the book really appealing. There is a great range of advice that covers all of the aspects of a Handmade business.
Some of the advice were things I already knew but that didn't detract from the value I got from reading this book.
My handmade business has gone from strength to strength since reading this book and I am even stocked in one of the most prestigious department stores in London.
Thanks Kari!
