A comprehensive guide for beginners,
By
This review is from: Grow Vegetables (Gardening) (Hardcover)
A newcomer to vegetable gardening will find everything they need to know in this book - from laying out their garden, choosing tools and growing from seed to choosing varieties and battling pests and diseases.
Full colour photographs make explanations clear and provide inspiration. There's detailed instructions on growing all the common vegetables, plus a few more exotic varieties you can try as you progress. If you're worried about learning Latin names, don't worry - there are none here. There is a nice section on which garden tasks are going to become chores (and hence should be minimized) and which are more enjoyable. There's also a very good year planner, helping you to do vegetable garden tasks as and when they become necessary. A good choice for a new gardener, and it would make a great gift.

I first borrowed this book from a local library, having just become a 1st time allotment holder, and needing knowledge. It quickly became my bible, so had to be purchased when I found I couldn't be without it. Sections are split into the main vegetable types, with each vegetable having a very quick easy reference table to planting times, details of when and how to plant or sow, general maintenance advice, what can go wrong, and recommended varieties. There are also sections on pest and parasites, diseases, and a jobs month by month chapter. Its really user friendly, and I rely on the information more than any other book I have (and I have many!) Would highly recommend it to newcomer and knowledgeable gardeners as a reference tool.
