Product Description

Product Description

This text provides an introduction to group theory with an emphasis on clear examples. The authors present groups as naturally occurring structures arising from symmetry in geometrical figures and other mathematical objects. Written in a 'user-friendly' style, where new ideas are always motivated before being fully introduced, the text will help readers to gain confidence and skill in handling group theory notation before progressing on to applying it in complex situations. An ideal companion to any first or second year course on the topic.

This book was my first reference to group theory and I can see no fault with it, the book starts from the basics and doesnt give the normal abstract approach from the beginning of the book, an approach which i see in lots of other books. So if you are confused with other books on this and get confused by all the symbols, etc, then buy this book for a different and more flavoured approach. There are plenty of exercises to check your understanding and everything is explained clearly.

An excellent book 11 Jun 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is a fantastic guide to Groups, it covers everything you need to know for a first or second year University Groups course and probably a lot of what you need for further courses.
The book is well presented with well laid out chapters, each which include a large number of worked examples and questions for the reader to do to help try and get their head around a particular topic.
A must buy for someone studying Groups.

A solid buy 22 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
Having purchased this as a recommended textbook, it certainly fits in with the course which I am following. The book starts off well by assuming no previous knowledge about groups, and presenting all the material from first principles. From thereon, it is relatively easy to follow. The frequent exercises ensure understanding, and are good practice for working through longer problems. I have not yet studied the whole book, but from what I have covered, the material is useful.
