Product Description

The NSpace Communication Network: A really big computer with an even bigger problem.
Stephen Ridenour: An enigmatic computer genius in search of his own sanity.
Wesley Smith: A perennial thorn in the ComNetAuthority's side.
Admiral Loren Cantrell: A woman with a mission to which an unwilling Stephen holds the key, and an even less cooperative Smith is the roadblock.
HuteNamid: a distant world that holds--all the answers.

GroundTies is the beginning of a much larger story, first of the three book story arc previously published by Warner Books. It is continued in UpLink and Harmonies of the 'Net and expanded in the upcoming 'NetWalkers, Nexus, Wildcard and ColdFusion. The final volume, Homecoming Games, is in production. Together they form the core of Fancher's future history of the ComNet Alliance.

135,000 words. Approximately 400 pages. Original Warner Edition

Special Introductory Price! When the sequel, UpLink, goes up, the price of GroundTies will go up to a whopping $2.99!

"--award-worthy. An edgy, often funny, sometimes frightening work in which you only think you know where you're going."

--Robert J. Sawyer: multiple award winning author of FlashForward

"... reads like Cherryh near her own top form...No padding or wheelspinning here, just the genuine article."
--Faren Miller: Locus

"Reading any book by Jane Fancher is like sitting down to a cup of really good hot cocoa--rich with just the right touch of darkness to make it interesting..."
--Patricia Briggs: #1 NY Times Best Selling Author of the Mercy Thompson Series

I got this from the author's website originally. You are plunged staight away into the mission of Admiral Cantrel aboard the Starship Cetacean investigating "something suspicious" involving a colony world and its population of "reconstructionists". People from this starfaring civilistion who are attempting to live like primitives from Earth's history. Living along side them but not necessarily with them are scientists from the advanced culture, usually there is "tension" between these two factions. On HuteNamid they're reconstructing Red Indian life.

This sounds like the episode of the week for ST:TNG except Fancher doesn't do red shirts, the story is told from all sides (not just the bridge), and no one's motivations are arbitrary (although they maybe mistaken).

A good read with 2 more follow ups written and may be some more to follow. Check the author's website.

This is a beautifully done ebook version of a book that has been around a long time, and should be considered a classic, though it somehow got a bit lost through the publishing industry's shakeups. The print edition on Amazon is here: Groundties. Thank goodness the author owns the rights to this book, and can now make it available on the 'Net - a totally appropriate place for this book. Unlike many kindle editions, this book is very well formatted, with a table of contents, attractive cover, italics where appropriate, indented paragraphs, and ToC links to introduction (by C.J. Cherryh) and the afterwords (by Jane S. Fancher herself).

A great read! 16 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
There is a gritty realism to the characters that immediately grabbed me and held my attention. Stephen's disturbed mental character was both endearing and frightening to me and I just had to read the book in one sitting until I was done. A very good read. In fact, for me, it has become a repeat read.
