Product Description

Product Description

Declared a "national treasure" by the White House in 1990, John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie is not only considered a great musician but also a major innovator in the jazz world. While his first and foremost claim to fame is helping to create the style known as bebop, Gillespie also did much to establish the inclusion of Latin American elements in jazz and was partially responsible for the inception of both Afro-Cuban jazz and bossa nova. Covering Dizzy's days as a flashy trumpet player in the swing bands of the 1930s, the worldwide fame and adoration he earned through a State Department-backed tour of his big band in the 1950s, and the many recordings and performances which defined a career that ran up to the early 1990s, this book traces the path and progress of an extraordinary - and most exploratory - American musician.

First Sentence
The sight of John Birks "Dizzy" Gillespie, the bell of his upswept trumpet pointing skyward, his cheeks distended into hamster-like pouches, and his ubiquitous beret, goatee, horn-rimmed spectacles, and pinstripe suit, became the archetypal image of a jazz musician. Read the first page

This review is from: Groovin' High: The Life of Dizzy Gillespie (Hardcover)
It was quite interesting to read about the life Gillespie had outside of what most people knew about, i.e. his daughter Jeanie Bryson. I commend Shipton for having the courage to discuss such a touchy subject. He attempts to strike a balance between Dizzy's private and professional life. Two thumbs up!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly readable, painstakingly researched bio of jazz giant, 24 May 1999

This review is from: Groovin' High: The Life of Dizzy Gillespie (Hardcover)
Shipton's biography of Gillespie is the first to reveal that the famously married Dizzy had a child out of wedlock. Rather than make this titillating tidbit the focus of his book, Shipton chose to keep the focus on the man and his music, where it belongs. A fine book about a wonderful man.
