The hallmark of a good book is that it stays with you long after reading it. Grisly Tales from Tumblewater is one of those books whose images linger when the pages are closed. Richly descriptive, with passages reminiscent of Dickens, this is a compelling tale, with a truly shocking twist (the first of many) just five pages in. It's style reminded me of the portmanteau horror films made by Amicus in the 1970's, with several stories entwined by the thread of the main plot. It's gripping reading, laced with toe-curling, pitch black humour. The sinister, ethereal orphan is someone you really don't want to walk home, and the gruesomely funny story of the baker will make you gasp. It did me!
An excellent, highly original book and a really thrilling read. The sequel can't come soon enough!
