Boris Karloff can grimace and petrify at the same time. No make-up here, just facial expression changes (rumour has it he removed his dentures for maximum impact). At 69 years of age Karloff plays a 19th century English author (James Rankin). 20 years earlier a convicted murderer who 'slashed' chorus girls in a cabaret club was hanged. Rankin is convinced he was not the maniac responsible. He, by typical means, obtains the murder weapon, a scalpel, and takes on the persona of the dead man. Obsessed, he is transformed by the spirit he has taken on to continue the brutal spree of killing. The plot contains twists and is carried almost wholly by Boris Karloff. He can blink, frown, lower his lip, look left or right and is downright menacing. The story is well-conceived without being trite. Another budget-priced film well worth a nail-biting late night viewing. Highly recommended film of its genre and a credit to Mr Karloff. (Titled 'The Haunted Strangler' in USA).
