5.0 out of 5 stars Funny / grim / poetic artist's book, 26 Dec 2000
By Paul Taylor (Cumbria UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Grip (Pocketbooks) (Paperback)
Glasgow based artist David Shrigley has shown in art galleries across the world, but this latest book is his most acessible and entertaining work yet- a volume of seemingly throw away doodles that grow in stature and meaning with greater familiarity. That shouldn't detract from the fact that they're almost all laugh-out-loud funny on first acquaintance- but after a while the darkly troubled world view being celebrated begins to make itself felt. Anyone who liked John Lennon's "In his own Write",for example, but felt they frankly weren't as good as his songs should definitely investigate-this is the book you were hoping for. There's a bleakness and apparently untroubled cackhandedness allied to a poetic (if strongly vernacular) tone of voice in this stuff- but before you've worked most of that out you've probably burst your sides laughing. I bought everyone I know a copy for Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Terribly Funny, 14 Dec 2000
By Mr. J. Mccormack "The Code Father" (Tadcaster, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Grip (Pocketbooks) (Paperback)
Every page of this book will shock your brain out of the everyday humdrum, and probably make you laugh out loud too. Dark and twisted, the logic presented here is hard to argue with. Think Radiohead and Chris Morris in a blender.
