Book Description

1 Jan 1993

The Brothers Grimm rediscovered a host of fairy tales, telling of princes and princesses in their castles, witches in their towers and forests, of giants and dwarfs, of fabulous animals and dark deeds.

This selection of their folk tales was made and translated by Lucy Crane, and includes firm favourites such as Rapunzel, The Goose Girl, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel and Snow White.

It is illustrated throughout by Walter Crane's charming line drawings.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE 13 Sep 2010
By Eleni TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent collection of fairy tales by the brothers Grimm. It contains 53 fairy tales, very characteristic of Grimm's work, which included more then 200 folk stories and fairy tales. All the best loved fairy tales are in this collection, like "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Grethel", "Little Red-cap", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Snow-white", and "The Frog Prince". However, what I loved most about this book is that apart from the well known tales it includes so many other less known stories and even several versions of the same theme, which are extremely interesting.

The wonderful, fascinating and at times dark fairy tales translated in this edition by Lucy Crane are accompanied by beautiful illustrations by her brother Walter Crane; in fact it includes some of his best work. Sadly there is no mention in the book of the date it was first published, but if I am not mistaken it is something like 1886.

This is a classic and I think no child should grow up without it, having said that I should add that it is a fascinating read for adults as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer BEWARE!! 15 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Unfortunately, in spite of my cover stating that this is "complete and unabridged", it is an expurgated collection and decidedly not "complete" as some of the stories are missing.

A shame.
