Product Description

These classic fairy tales have left an indelible mark on Western culture, a testament to the brilliance and skill of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.

About the Author

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics best known for publishing collections of folk tales and fairy tales, which became popular. Jacob also did academic work in linguistics, related to how the sounds in words shift over time (Grimm's law), and together they wrote a German dictionary. They are among the best-known story tellers of folk tales from Europe, and their work popularized such tales as "Rumpelstiltskin"(German: Rumpelstilzchen), "Snow White", "Sleeping Beauty", "Rapunzel", "Cinderella"(German: Aschenputtel), "Hansel and Gretel(German: Hänsel und Gretel)", and "The Frog Prince"(German: Der Froschkonig).

4.0 out of 5 stars Grimm's Fairytales 1 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This was the first book I read on my lovely new Kindle. Oh the excitement!

I suppose though my method of reading them was not the best. I read them all one after the other and that did make them all seem to blend together a little, and made the similar ones so much more obviously similar. There was a certain strangeness about it.

A lot of the stories of course I knew, but I was surprised by some of the differences, and that there were so many I didn't know. I especially enjoyed The Six Swans and although there were aspects I recognised it was not a story I really knew which made me wonder why it is not more well known.

The stories were simple and easy to read, perfect bedtime reading

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Edition 7 Sep 2011
By CLP
Format:Hardcover
This is a beautiful book which I bought as a gift for a friend. The copy I received actually came with a dust jacket: green with the colour plate of Red Riding Hood meeting the wolf in the forest on the front and another from Rapunzel, smaller, on the back. I have now bought two books from Calla Editions/Dover, this one and East of the Sun and West of the Moon (Calla Editions) illustrated by Kay Nielsen. I highly recommend them both for children and adult collectors alike.

The layout of the free Kindle edition of this book is a fine one, without layout absurdities like in other free Kindle editions of Grimm's tales (e.g. ASIN: B0082QF338). However, the texts are not very close to the German original. For example, the tale "The Frog-Prince" (in German "Der Froschkönig oder der eiserne Heinrich" = "The Frog-King, or Iron Henry") begins in the original (and in ASIN: B0082QF338): "In old times, when wishing still helped one, [...]" whereas in this book, the translator comes straight to the point: "One fine evening, a young princess put on her bonnet and clogs, [...]". In this rather free translation, the text suffers quite a loss.

A poor text. With a good layout for the free kindle edition. Nevertheless: Not recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for older children 16 May 2013

I wanted this to read to my very young son, but the stories are a bit long and wordy for him. The language is also a bit too advanced, but I am rnjoying it.

... which have left without any doubt an indelible mark on the Western cultures, a testament to the brilliance and skill of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.

Synopsis:
"The classic fairy tales compiled by Jacob and Wilhelm, the Brothers Grimm (1812) are stories of dark wisdom with a bite. Not for the faint-hearted, not for the weak of spirit, not for anyone expecting childish fluff. Contained within these pages are fairy tales that show the dark beauty of truth, and the cold mirror of common sense, clad in the rich glamour of the imagination."

But I only can recommend this oh so complete collection of more than 50 of the most known fables and fairy tales, but also minors aren't neglected.
I - personally (a German) - have rarely seen a collection so complete and also well translated like this!

OK - I loaded it down as a Freebie on March 01, 2013 - but whatever its cost may be - it is worth it!

So - to all interested readers - have a very nice read and...
pass those Fairy Tales along to Your little ones!
Because they are worth it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising how these stories have been altered! 28 Nov 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The original, often macabre and hugely entertaining book of fairy tails. Much more adult in content, and succinct. Very much more enjoyable than the fluffed up versions around now!

5.0 out of 5 stars A much loved Gift 3 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my niece who, at the tender age of 7, is already a great reader. I buy her a quality edition of a book for Birthday's and Christmas and have previously given her many old favourites. Other reviewers have mentioned that it makes an excellent keepsake and I agree whole heartedly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not grim but only for the kids
There are plenty of stories, but most of them did not hold the attention of my children. There were some they enjoyed, but I am afraid the majority were not very popular.

This is OK, Ordered it on Kindle and as I work with dream material and how myths have shaped the world, fairly tales can tell us a lot about our past and the collective.

I hadn't read these stories for years and having listened to a recent Radio 4 Programme, I decided to re- read them. Quite dark and mysterious. Not really for children after all

Some men are born to good luck: all they do or try to do comes right—all that falls to them is so much gain—all their geese are swans—all their cards are trumps—toss them which way you will, they will always, like poor puss, alight upon their legs, and only move on so much the faster.
