Review

'A classic story of a haunted hotel with a modern twist ... his tale is frightening and intriguing, but with a humorous side.' -- Hazel Mollison, Edinburgh Evening News 'This is a tale full of mystery and fun ... accomplished readers will enjoy it.' -- Armadillo Magazine, Winter 2008 'Capturing the essence of the small town and written in a relaxed style, there are many dark mysteries to be solved and intriguing, dismal avenues to explore, but all are connected by a thread of humour that lifts the suspense and prevents young readers from suffering bad dreams after reading about the haunted hotel.' -- Jayne Howarth, Carousel, Spring 2009 'A humorous adventure story to delight younger readers.' -- The Scots Magazine, February 2009 'Mysteries abound, strands are revealed and pursued and past and present merge as a wonderfully complex jig-saw of a plot is resolved with striking pace and panache. A splendidly complex puzzle with grand characters hovering between fantasy and reality but with feet firmly rooted in relationships and loyalties makes for a good read for both boys and girls.' -- Chris Brown, The School Librarian 'I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really liked Rory and it was funny finding out how he got to grips with all the strange happenings at Hotel Grimm. I also enjoyed how the story turned into a mystery which Rory had to get to the bottom of.' -- Megan Corsie, Leith Academy, writing for Teen Titles Magazine

Product Description

If you have the misfortune to spend a night at Hotel Grimm, it may be the last one you spend anywhere! Or so the residents of Aberfintry believe. From its vantage point high above the town, the hotel has long been the source of dead guests and terrifying stories. When eleven-year-old Rory McKenna becomes an overnight advertising sensation for Zizz Cola, Hotel Grimm's mysterious owner, Granville Grimm, presents Rory with the task of giving his hotel a new image. Refusal is not an option...Can 'Zizz Boy' do it again, or will he become Hotel Grimm's next victim? Full of unexpected twists and turns, surprising allies and things that go bump in the night, Rory's life is about to get very complicated. Set in the fictional town of Aberfintry, located roughly in Scotland's Trossachs region, this is a humorous adventure story from the prize-winning author of "Catscape".

A Kid's Review
Format:Paperback
i think this is a brilliant book, a little hard to get into at the start, but once you are settled into the fictious town of Aberfintry, it is a very good story, Rory Mckenna, an advertising sensation, becomes Zizz Boy overnight, but the award winning slogan isnt his. Lots of other companies want to get a bite of the action, but are all turned down until an invitation (or should that be commission) comes that he cannot turn down, Rebranding Hotel Grimm. It is bad luck to turn down working at Hotel Grimm, some "punishments" include getting eletrocuted by a doorbell, and getting crushed under a mound of wallpaper rolls. But if Rory doesnt rebrand Hotel Grimm, far worse things might happen.

I highly recommend this book for anyone that is looking for some fun and mystery. Even though it is written for a younger audience, I think the humour and entertaining characters will appeal to all ages. I had a hard time putting it down once I started. The characters are charming and I only wish that Hotel Grimm existed so I could go and stay! I won't give away any of the plot, but the twists and turns keep you guessing. This is a great book to get all your younger (and older!) friends for Christmas. Read it aloud to your kids and/or your partner; you will have a great time together.

The story of Grimm is a great read for all ages. It was recommended to me by a friend so I took it on holiday, and whilst the dusk settled in the midst of frogs and gecko's I forgot I was in India and submerged myself into the Scottish surroundings of Aberfintry! A thoroughly enjoyable read with intrigue, humour and entertaining characters!
