The best kids book ever!, 9 Feb 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Grimble AND Grimble at Christmas(Puffin Books) (Paperback)
I read this as a kid back in the sixties, and although the dialogue has moments of dating it,both my children aged 9 and 12 have loved reading this book.( it was also read in class at school) It has got to be the funniest book on child neglect there ever was! Grimble is left home alone with only notes to guide him until his parents return from Peru. He has various names on a list to contact, should he need help, but most of these people aren't in and they have left notes for him too!!! The humour is great for kids and adults alike,I really believe this has got to be one of the greatest childrens books ever written,Clement Freud is a genius!!

OOOh I loved this, 24 Aug 2003
This review is from: Grimble AND Grimble at Christmas(Puffin Books) (Paperback)
I read this as a kid and here I am about to buy it for my son (aged 6). If you like the quirky anarchic qualities of Roald Dahl this may appeal. The story of a boy who fends for himself...and enjoys it...his parents leave him while they have their own adventures and Grimble (that's his only name) gets on with life in general and cooking in particular (he's the inventor of onion fudge) in a funny and unusual book. I'm knocking on a bit now, but of the thousands of books I read as a nipper this one stuck in my head, can't wait to read it again!

Three words "left-footed penalties" - Aaah..., 1 Feb 2005
This review is from: Grimble AND Grimble at Christmas(Puffin Books) (Paperback)
Grimble by mr clement freud (Rt Hon?) is in the top three most memorable books I read as a child. (The others being "the Horse and his Boy", and "Great Expectations" - yes I was a little precocious with the reading material.) It is a truly wonderful, hilarious book, with, in my view, far more to recommend it than Roald Dahl, to which one of the other reviewers compared it. It has far kinder and gentler a world view - more whimsy about it. Grimble is an ordinary, if rather marvellous boy, and his experiences echo this. Who else thought he was a complete genius for the left-footed penalty thing? And how much fun does making coconut tart sound? And why did my parents never disappear off to South America leaving notes all over, and sandwiches in the oven? Really, this book is an absolute must for every bookshelf.
