I just acquired a new iphone 4s 64g on pay-as-you go so was looking for a really decent case that both looks smart and affords a good level of protection. I initially bought the Griffin Survivor case which although is a very well made product which meets the above, is rather chunky for day to day use. I then spent hours looking for an alternative and narrowed it down to it's brother, the Griffin Impact case.

Firstly, absolutely full marks to Amazon who despite clearly stating it would not arrive before Xmas day, arrived the day before.

Anyway I was not disappointed as the case looks amazing and fits really snug. It is constucted from quality silicone and feels really smooth and does not stick inside your pocket like the iSkin which I previously used for my iPhone 3g.

I will use the Griffin Survivor for sports such as snowboarding and the Grffin Impact for day to day use.

In summary, a quality case which I highly recommend.

This case is far superior to the 2 piece hard plastic cases which come apart if you drop the phone. I scratched my new phone in the first week using a Griffin Form Graphite case. I swapped it for this case as it's 1 piece silicon and offers far greater protection. Some people might not like the fact that most of the phone is covered up but, if your accident prone like me, couple this with a screen protector and you can't go wrong! The only downside I can see is that the silicone can attract the dust and fluff from your pocket!

After 6 weeks of use, the Griffin Protector Case has slowly grown.
It spends a lot if time in a holder on the car windscreen or on a desk top - which is not an arduous life for it.
It's now a bit too long and wide, the result of which is the phone slides to the bottom of the case and the front facing camera and ear piece are partially covered.
The volume buttons on the side no longer line up either.
A gentle squeeze on the sides (like when it's in a windscreen holder) and the front face bows outwards, making it seem like a real cheap bit of kit.

None of these issues make it unusable, but it's not what you expect from Griffin.
I find myself 'bouncing' the phone at the top to make it slip back into place and line up.

To quote from the Amazon web page:
Technical Details = Secure Fit, Eyecatching design and colour, Smooth Finish, Full access to controls, Featuring a stunning, high-gloss finish....
I agree with the smooth finish statement, the rest is way off the mark, and where did they get the 'high gloss' bit from?

Another note of caution is if you get anything abrasive (sand) inside any cover like this, it stays there and grinds scratches into the back of your phone without you knowing it's there.

The Griffin Protector case is a good case and all the buttons work through the case without an issue. The screen is not protected by the case so you will need to buy screen protectors.

Not as hard core as the Griffin Survivor case though it still stands out over its contempories .

I bought into Griffin after seeing how they aggressively test their extreme cases. It was the one of the device in a survivor case being towed behind a motorbike on a length of rope that stuck a chord.

So does this one live up to expectations?

I work outside a lot and occasionally drop my phone. I once dropped an N95 accidentally into a puddle and that was the end of that one.

So when I am outside I stick to using the Griffin survivor case. However, when I go out for the evening I don't want to be lugging this meaty bruiser of a case. Instead I want something more sophisticated and a little less bulky in my pocket. Yet even with this case there is very little compromise over protection. Again this case will not win a 'pretty faces' competition, the case adds a little less bulk to the phone compared to the massive bulk of the survivor case.

It still tough but, it does not have the built in screen protector or port covers. So if your pockets, like mine contain the odd set of keys, fluff, chocolate raisins, biscuit crumbs, nails, screws, screwdrivers, wire, fuses, coins, sea shells (true), sand etc then you may want to consider the survivor case or the purchase of a quality screen protector to go with this phone. There's nothing worse than digging out fluff from the earphone socket.

The bottom line?

If you are fashion conscious and want to display the phone, forget it. Then you should go and find yourself a namby pamby designer case and 'hope' when you drop the phone it will survive. When it does not you can still admire your broken phone in its pretty designer case.

By the time I had decided to get an iphone 4 I was already looking at cases before my phone had arrived - I like keeping my things pristine, especially when they aren't cheap! I looked at bumper covers but really wanted one that covered and protected more of the phone, even though it looks so good out of a case.

I thought the case might be a bit bulky but it's fine actually. The silicone case does attract dust and fluff and it's difficult to push in to your pocket, but the dust is actually very easily wiped of with your fingers, unlike some silicone cases on which fluff seems impossible to get off. Lying the phone flat on it's front or back, the screen and camera hole are both elevated off the surface thanks to the case's thickness (about 2mm at the thickest).

I've taken the phone in and out of the case a few times but it seems to hold it's shape well. All of the buttons are easily pressed through the case and everything seems snug fitting, very well lined up and placed. It feels like it could absorb a small drop too, say from a sitting position on to a hard floor, although I wouldn't go testing that. It's a very good quailty case and the price reflects that, it's not the cheapest case but for the money, I definitely think it's the best and I'm really happy with it.
