Product Description

The original USB audio adapter! iMic lets Mac and PC users add stereo input and output to USB computers even if they lack audio-in or -out ports.

iMic allows you to connect many microphones and sound input devices to your iBook, PowerBook, PowerMac or other Mac or PC systems with a USB port. iMic supports both mic and line level inputs via a selectable switch, and provides a line-level output for connecting speakers or headphones.

iMic shines as the essential tool for converting your vinyl LP and tape collection into MP3s and CDs. Recording records and tapes through iMic directly from your turntable or tape deck is super easy. The included CD-ROM provides all the software you need: for Mac users, Final Vinyl (with advanced features such as waveform-based cue editing and 10-band EQ, including a special RIAA filter that properly equalizes LPs without having to connect your turntable to a pre-amp); and, for PC users, the popular open-source, full-featured recording application, Audacity.

Use iMic to make your own recordings, too -- it's great for home studio recording and podcasting. Plug microphones and musical instruments directly into iMic. iMic is compatible with modern hardware to provide the perfect solution for sound recording in almost any audio application, including GarageBand, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro.

I found this simple little gadget extremely easy to use to copy my old casette tapes onto my Mac. Simply plug one end into the back of the tape deck and the other end into the USB port on the Mac. Download the free software, Final Vinyl, and simply press play on the tape deck and record on the Final Vinyl. You can then import the music file into iTunes. Really simple, even for the IT numpty like me.

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for an inexpensive method of converting their treasured vinyl into a digital format for future safe-keeping (or for whatever reason), particularly if you need software which is Mac compatible (Macs will generally only deal with Aiff files, not Wav) and this Griffin device comes with "Final Vinyl" software for the Mac.

There are two caveats to my recommendation (hence the four stars); most importantly, if you are used to good reproduction of your records through your Hi-Fi system then you will be sorely disappointed with the results you get if you wire your turntable directly into the iMic using its in-built pre-amplifier (thin sounding, over bright, all bass sucked out of it and an over emphasisis on noise, presumably due to poor earthing). So why bother? Just keep your deck connected to your amp as usual and make a connection from the output sockets of the amp (just as you would to a conventional tape deck) into the line input sockets of the iMic and let your own (almost certainly) vastly superior pre-amp do all the work! The other slight issue I have is that the instructions, whilst on the whole admirably clear - and they need to be for a technical dummy like me - about setting everything up and getting going, they are not particularly detailed about how you can edit the files you save and accurately locate individual tracks. It takes time to adjust to the various procedures you need to go through to get a really good copy of your original disc with all the tracks in the right place.

If you are copying the files you have saved to your hard disc onto a CD, I would suggest that you have carefully named all the tracks you want to write so that they appear in the right order and use a good CD burning interface like "Toast" so that you can control the pauses between tracks - you will most likely want to set a pause of 0 seconds so as to replicate the original otherwise you will get annoying silent gaps of two or three seconds. Likewise, if you want larger gaps, you can set those as well.

Overall, this product has the potential if used with care to give virtually flawless copies of analogue originals and I have been amazed at how good the results can be. If it weren't for the foregoing I would give the iMic 5 stars. I have done "blind" listenings with a number of friends and they can't tell the difference between the vinyl LP and the CD copy of it as I toggle between the two. (Incidentally, its also important to set the recording level to a sensible level in the sound input preferences of your computer.) This rather blows out of the water my theory that analogue sound is inherently better than digital but rather suggests to me that so many commercially available CDs are just badly mastered (ie too loud and therefore over compressed - there is no doubt a commercial/customer pressure to do this). So, yes, if you want to copy your records then buy this iMic!

Useful Little Gadget 13 Aug 2007
By MacPete
* As USB audio-out device from MacBook to Denon 5.1 surround A/V amp - superb.
* As mic-in device for connecting stereo condenser mic to MacBook - superb, esp for ambient soundscape type recordings.
* As pre-amp for recording Vinyls - superb + nice software for naming / combining tracks
* Smaller than expected from looking at photo + weighs next to nothing - great!

Came in good time and good quality, works with my mac and Audacity mp3 file editor. I would recommend this product for audio input when a lap top does not have a 3.5mm jack socket.
