Product Description

Product Description

Minutes after Sergeant Pete Decker witnesses his wife give birth to their first child his policeman's instinct tells him something's wrong - not just with his baby but with the hospital itself. The disappearance of a new-born baby, together with that of the nurse in charge of the post-natal unit, confirms once again that Decker's instincts were correct and he is soon put on the case. The early signs look bad - the missing nurse's burnt-out car, together with some charred remains, are found in a remote ravine. But as Decker and his partner delve deeper, they start to uncover the network of family tragedy and betrayal that led to the  frantic kidnapping of an innocent baby girl.

Superior mystery 24 Nov 2005
By Budge Burgess TOP 500 REVIEWER
The sixth of Faye Kellerman's Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus novels (the first of the series was "The Ritual Bath"). Peter Decker is a Homicide Detective with other things on his mind - his wife has just given birth to a daughter. But, in what at first seems like a case of abduction and a negligence claim against the hospital, a newborn is taken from the ward. Suspicion immediately falls on a missing nurse, but it's not as simple as that.

Faye Kellerman writes fluidly and intelligently. She handles words, characterisation and plot with style and precision and has built a convincing partnership out of Decker and his relationship with Lazarus - the woman he meets investigating a crime and who goes on to become his girlfriend, marry him, and so on. Kellerman constructs terse psychological thrillers which move at pace-turning speed and which keep you engaged and entertained.

"Grievous Sin" is an excellent mystery which captures your attention from page one and keeps your eyes locked to the page. As the first Kellerman I'd read, it left me determined to backtrack and start with the first in the series. It's an intriguing partnership, Decker and Lazarus, and Kellerman handles their dynamics well. Good book, well worth reading.

Keeps you hooked 10 Jun 2010

I had read several of the Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus series in no particular order. I decided it was time to start at the beginning and have just finished this, with the next two waiting to be read.. It is one of my favourites so far.

Faye Kellerman builds great characters, whom you can picture in your mind. Her stories are riveting and through Rina's character I feel I have gained knowledge about the Jewish faith and culture. Sometimes too much information is offered but you can skim over these parts quickly. This isn't the case with this book however. The story was intriguing and if I had had the spare time I would have sat and read it from cover to cover in one go.

To sum it up - a great read.
