Book Description

New York Times and international bestseller Faye Kellerman weaves a nail-biting page-turner in this, the sixth crime novel in her Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus series.

The birth of their baby girl has filled Rina Lazarus and her husband, LAPD Homicide Detective Peter Decker, with joy mingled with sorrow, since complications have ensured that they can have no more children. But the situation is grim at the hospital, which has been devastated by severe budget cutbacks and staff shortages. And when a respected nurse vanishes along with a newborn from the nursery, Peter and Rina fear for the safety of their own precious child—especially when the missing nurse’s car is found at the bottom of a cliff … with a corpse inside.

A most grievous sin has been committed. In pursuit of justice, Decker—with the help of his tough-as-nails partner, Madge, and an able assist from his teenage daughter Cindy—follows a twisted path that winds through a sinister maze of hospital politics, misplaced passions, and torturous mind games that can all too easily lead to murder.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superior mystery 24 Nov. 2005
Format:Paperback
The sixth of Faye Kellerman's Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus novels (the first of the series was "The Ritual Bath"). Peter Decker is a Homicide Detective with other things on his mind - his wife has just given birth to a daughter. But, in what at first seems like a case of abduction and a negligence claim against the hospital, a newborn is taken from the ward. Suspicion immediately falls on a missing nurse, but it's not as simple as that.
Faye Kellerman writes fluidly and intelligently. She handles words, characterisation and plot with style and precision and has built a convincing partnership out of Decker and his relationship with Lazarus - the woman he meets investigating a crime and who goes on to become his girlfriend, marry him, and so on. Kellerman constructs terse psychological thrillers which move at pace-turning speed and which keep you engaged and entertained.
"Grievous Sin" is an excellent mystery which captures your attention from page one and keeps your eyes locked to the page. As the first Kellerman I'd read, it left me determined to backtrack and start with the first in the series. It's an intriguing partnership, Decker and Lazarus, and Kellerman handles their dynamics well. Good book, well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 - Possible Spoilers in Review 30 Sept. 2013
Format:Paperback
This is a mystery about every new mothers worse nightmare. What if right after you've delivered your baby; the babe not more than 20 hours old - someone stole the baby from the hospitals nursery?

And that along with some interesting side stories that have to do with Pete, Rina and Cindy.

Rina has just had her baby and is dealing with some very personal issues, when another baby goes missing from the hospital. Cindy just happens to be with her new sibling in the nursery when this happens and is being treated as a sort of witness. It is actually very hard to recap this novel, since it was such an emotional one.

There is not a lot of action, and in the Decker novels there very rarely is, but there is a lot of interesting psychological twists and turns... not too many red herrings, but a lot of interesting conclusions to the main story and all the off-shoot stories.

The characters a very well drawn, as usual - even the ones we don't see all that often.
The author never muddies the story by over-explaining things(looks, clothing background etc).
This is a heart stopping emotional roller-coaster of a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you hooked 10 Jun. 2010

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had read several of the Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus series in no particular order. I decided it was time to start at the beginning and have just finished this, with the next two waiting to be read.. It is one of my favourites so far.

Faye Kellerman builds great characters, whom you can picture in your mind. Her stories are riveting and through Rina's character I feel I have gained knowledge about the Jewish faith and culture. Sometimes too much information is offered but you can skim over these parts quickly. This isn't the case with this book however. The story was intriguing and if I had had the spare time I would have sat and read it from cover to cover in one go.

To sum it up - a great read.
