I'm not sure what I was expecting from this disc, - a good but maybe dutiful performance (like the Piano Concerto in this series) and BIS's usual good but not DSD-great sound, maybe.
But the performances are exemplary, - way better than good. This is a living recreation of the suites and, for me, it rekindled my childhood love of/for them. They are among the most recorded works of all but Ruud and the Bergeners make them seem fresh and newly minted. A fine achievement.
The other pieces on the disc are all interesting and enjoyable works and well worth hearing.
The sound? Extaordinarily good, - powerful, impactful but also detailed, immediate but not too close and easily coping with everything the Bergeners throw at it. This must surely be as good as 24/96 gets, and lacks only the last ounce of silky transparency that DSD recording would have given to be worth a Rosette.
No matter how many recordings of the peer gynt suites you own or have owned, you really must try this one. It's special. Thank you BIS.
