Having bought a number of CDs in this cycle of Grieg's solo piano music, I was hoping to delight in the melodies in this one. Instead, we have pieces that can hardly be called miniatures, and that are just barely fragments. This isn't the fault of the excellent pianist, Einar Steen-Nokleborg who has a deep and lyrical understanding of his countryman's music. One longs for the melodies to be repeated but we have to put up with many of them less than a minute long.
If you want to invest in this cycle, make a start with Volume 4 which includes The Holberg Suite and the famous Morning from Peer Gynt Suite No 1. It's probably the best introduction to Grieg's kind of virtuosity for piano after a stressful day at work or play.
