Following on from the recent Naxos recording of the two string quartets arranged for string orchestra, here within a couple of months we have a second recording of the first of the quartets arranged for strings, but that is where the similarities end. The Naxos recording was of an arrangement by Alf Årdal whilst the present recording is arranged by Richard Tognetti, who also arranged the Lyric piece. In comparison, the Årdal arrangement was dull and left you wondering why he had bothered, the Tognetti however, well that is a totally different kettle of fish, it is light, bright and full of life, you almost thing that they are lost pieces from the Holberg or Peer Gynt suites.
The Tognetti arrangement of Erotikk is also expertly done, placing Tognetti not only as director, but also as solo violin, a role he relishes in this sensitive arrangement of this short piano piece.
The Playing throughout is excellent, it is taught and well controlled by Tognetti from the lead violin position, you may find finer recordings of the Holberg and Elegiac Melodies from some of the Nordic ensembles, which you would expect, but the ACO's recording is spirited and very enjoyable, you certainly won't be disappointed by their performance, and this new arrangement of the string quartet is the only one I would recommend!
