Review

'The fourth edition of this book retains all the theoretical strengths and clinical wisdom of past editions, while incorporating emerging theories and cutting-edge research. It is required reading for any counselor, educator, or researcher who wishes to understand grief.' - Kenneth J. Doka, PhD, Professor, The Graduate School, The College of New Rochelle; Senior Consultant, The Hospice Foundation of America, USA

Product Description

Grief affects different people in different ways, most emerge from mourning in a healthy manner but for some the death of a loved one can cause intense emotional pain that is difficult to recover from. This type of grief can often surface as an underlying cause of physical and mental health problems requiring professional treatment.

This highly anticipated fourth edition builds on the success of the previous editions which received worldwide acclaim for their sensitive, insightful, and practical approach to grief counselling. Worden incorporates emerging theories and cutting edge research into this fully revised edition which includes:

  • a new chapter on the mourning process discussing the personal and social difficulties that shape mourning
  • detailed guidelines for approaching special types of grief including suicide, sudden death and miscarriage
  • an updated version of the Task Model.

Grief Counselling and Grief Therapy is an essential resource for everyone working with the bereaved, from those just entering the field, to seasoned practitioners.

Having recently been through the experience of caring for and nursing a dying beloved one to the point of death, I looked for material that could help me cope with and better understand the grief I now experience after the passing of my life partner. J. William Worden's Grief Counselling and Grief Therapy is a comprehensive and scientifically well-grounded handbook that is also humane and free from dogmatism. Worden helps both students of (e.g.) medicine, psychiatry and social work - and the grieving reader - to begin to understand the sheer complexity and unpredictability of the greving process within a broad interpretative framework. Above all, Professor Worden helps the reader distinguish between 'normal' and 'abnormal' grieving.

amazing! 28 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
I'm currently studying to be a Cruse bereavement volunteer after suffering many deaths (old and young) over the past 20 years and borrowed an old version of this book from our Cruse branch. I loved it so much I bought this updated version. Not only is it a fantastic reference guide for those of us studying grief and bereavement but it's written in such a clear and sensitive way it would be helpful for anyone struggling to understand their own grief or the grief of others. I can't recommend it highly enough.
