Book Description

11 Aug 2011
Why do we spend so much time stuck in traffic? After Peak Oil, do we face the prospect of Peak Travel? Does climate change mean no more foreign holidays? In Victorian times, Britain used to have the finest transport system in the world. Today, the future seems to belong to China with its ever growing High Speed Rail networks or Dubai and its titanic new five runway airport. What went wrong? For the last hundred years, the planners at the centre of our transport system have told us what roads, railways or airports we can use. Now, to save the planet they tell us to give up our cars and planes. If we break away from the planners control, we can have roads that run freely and trains that arrive on time. Climate change can be tackled without giving up air travel. Riding a train should be as reliable as picking up bread from your local shop. Gridlock Nation looks at the timeless problems faced in transport, from traffic jams in Rome to Victorian road rage. It examines the potential of dazzling innovations across the world, from the private sector space revolution to Google s new driverless cars. Britain needs a new revolution in transport - or gridlock will soon bring the country to a halt.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waffle Nation 21 Jun 2012
By Tarquin
Format:Paperback
I picked this up hoping for a refreshing evidence based approach to allowing markets to organise transport. What I read was something that might have appeared in the Daily Mail - a series of glib and mostly unsupported opinions. Sources often appear to be the unsupported opinions of other people with the same views; a sort of circular flow of waffle. Criticism of transport planners seems to be a given and the little evidence points to plans made as far back as 1942. The authors claim that the tolled Birmingham northern relief road is a success - which is odd given the huge losses racked up by the hapless owners according to recent sets of accounts.
What is called for is an honest, unbiased look at evidence from all kinds of market related pricing of transport. This, I am afraid, is not it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Insultingly 1 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
God knows I am a forgiving reader, happy to be swept along if the writing is in any way decent, but this book would test the patience of the most easy going saint. It is poorly researched, clunkily written, full of sweeping statements backed by, at best, anecdote but often nothing more than the breezy confidence of the authors themselves. There is something heroic about writing something as bad, ill-informed and lazy as this, even more heroic to get it published. Spare yourself the time it takes to read it, go for a nice walk instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking 4 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
A really interesting take on the state of the nation's transport.

One of the things you take for granted in this country is the frankly awful state of public transport, Gridlock Nation takes a step back and looks at the problem and suggests some thought interesting alternatives.

There are some interesting references to similar problems throughout history - although I can't help but think the authors have over-glamourised the Victorian era somewhat!

Thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking - let's do something about transport in the UK and the rest of the world!

(edit: More on bicycles would have been nice)
