Captures the essence of the unique BBC2 show, 22 Jan 2004
This North American release to mark the 30th anniversary of the Old Grey Whistle Test evokes great memories of watching the show live late on Tuesday nights during the 70's and 80's from the minute the star kicker sequence runs followed by the foreward by "Whispering" Bob Harris. The video and audio are of the highest quality considering the era the shows were recorded and are a tribute to the craft of the BBC camera men and sound engineers.
Each one of the 28 performances is introduced by one of the various presenters of the show, often with informative anecdotes about the artist or their appearance on the show. Various musical genres are represented: everything from Iggy Pop to Randy Newman; Captain Beefheart to Elton John; The Specials to Edgar Winter. Great live performances from Rory Gallagher, U2, REM, The Police, The Wailers and a host of American bands and artists making their UK television debuts. Featured are interviews with John Lennon, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Robert Plant and Bruce Springsteen. Lennon also performs from a studio in the US while a clip form an outdoor concert by Springsteen is also featured.
The DVD is well structured with the ability to play the entire three hour show, play performances at random, or select individual performances from the Artists Gallery menu. Optional audio commentary by OGWT producer Mike Appleton is also available as are subtitles.
