Well here I am again trying to defend the second installment of The Old Grey Whistle Test compilations. Not a lot of people agreed with me on my review of the OGWT's first 2CD compilation (see my other reviews) so I am setting myself up here for another '0 out of 20 found this review useful'!!
C'mon guys (and girls) - the music on here is by and large of an excellent standard and is utilising (as far as my ears can tell) remastered versions of most of the songs in question (CD 1 & 2). If people took the time to read what it says on the packaging or on Amazon's write-up, only CD 3 is 'live'. Not too difficult (oops, thats now gone to '0 out of 30 people found this review useful'!). And I thought that it was fairly common knowledge that much of the 'live' material on OGWT wasn't as live as we thought it was owing to the frankly bizarre Musicians Union rulings which does kind of restrict what can be released as officially live and unreleased material.
I've played this end to end a couple of times now and the music's great - I knew what I was getting before I bought it (and I'm not being smug or self-righteous here). I just read what it said on the tin, so to speak. Unfair I think to give it 1 or 2 stars although it is not without its faults - the edited Freebird and Jessica the main offenders but top marks for full length Hocus Pocus, Radar Love and Whisky in the Jar.
And Led Zep and Mr Robert Plant don't appear on too many compilations either when you think about it. Just put it on, turn it up and enjoy.......just like the first one really.
