I think this is the earliest Miss Silver story - Charles returns to his family home after a long absence overseas (nursing a broken heart) and discovers a secret meeting of masked criminals being held there - to his horror he recognises a woman in a grey mask as his former fiancee. Miss Silver is called in to investigate how Margaret's life has taken such a drastic turn. Excellent storyline and a great read.

Grey Mask 1 Feb 2011

Charles Moray goes abroad for several years after being jilted by his fiancee, Margaret Langton. Going to inspect his old house, he hears noises upstairs and stumbles upon a criminal gang. As he spies on them, he overhears them speaking of Margot Standing. She is an heiress, whose fortune they hope to steal and they speak of killing her. His immediate thought is to contact the police, when he recognises Margaret as one of the people in the room. Thrown into the mystery, unable to go to the police for fear of Margaret's involvement, he turns to Miss Maud Silver. Miss Silver seems to spend most of her time knitting, yet she is at every scene and knows exactly what is going on - she reminded me of one of Lord Peter Wimsey's old biddies, only she is most certainly in charge herself. I love golden age mysteries and this had everything - lost and found heiresses, people disappearing, masked criminals, London foggy streets, snippets of letters and intrigue at every turn. Margot is a delightful child, making it harder for people to look after her by blabbing every secret possible to everyone she comes across and the whole book is very tongue in cheek, but utterly enjoyable to read. I will certainly read more by this author and I am glad I have found this series. This is the first book in the series and I read the kindle version of this book, which was error free and well edited.

Dark and dangerous 16 Jan 2011

This is one of the darkest of Patricia Wentworth's books which I have read. Charles Moray returns to the UK after a long absence following the breakup of his engagement to Margaret Langton. He decides to visit the house left to him by his father which has been shut up since his death. Even though the house is empty it soon becomes clear it is being used by a group of criminals as a meeting place. Charles hides in a cupboard and sees his former fiancée who appears to be part of the gang.

This leaves Charles in a difficult situation because he still loves Margaret and the gang seem to be plotting murder. His obvious course of action is to go to the police but he doesn't want to implicate Margaret and he doesn't think he will be believed. So he consults Miss Silver.

What follows is a sinister tale of missing heiresses and possible murder where loyalties shift and change and no one is sure who they can trust. I found once I'd started reading I had to continue to find out who exactly wears the grey mask of the head of the criminal gang. This is an excellent story with an exciting and unexpected ending - for me at any rate.
