Product Description

75 great songs from the heartland of American soul. For many people, the songs that originated in Detroit during the 1960s are the very definition of soul music. Known as the Motor City due to its once-prosperous car manufacturing industry, Detroit s other great worldwide export was put together in much the same way as its famous cars, as a production line of songwriters, singers, musicians, producers and arrangers put together hit after hit. But this was no ordinary production line, featuring as it did some of the very best in the business. Names like Marvin Gaye
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
Diana Ross & The Supremes and The Temptations are still remembered today as some of the finest performers of soul music in history, and this great three-disc set brings together some of their greatest early songs with other groove-filled hits from the dawn of soul. So turn up the stereo, slip on your dancing shoes, take your partner by the hand and be transported back to Hitsville, USA! Songs include: Please Mr Postman by The Marvelettes
Money (That s What I Want) by Barrett Strong
Mr Sandman by Marvin Gaye
Who s Lovin You? by The Supremes
Check Yourself by The Temptations
Shop Around by The Miracles and many more

I bought this in a supermarket for £3.
What did I buy?
None other than the first 75 US A-sides put out by Berry Gordy from 1959 to 1961.

Now I'm not too sure about the ethics of out-of-copyright releases like this but the original vinyl would have cost me literally thousands of pounds, and the Motown label either deals with expensive boxes or pap (Michael Jackson, post-60s material etc.) when it comes to a re-issue policy.

The music is the sound of a label desperately trying to get a hit with Gospel, Rock 'n' Roll, Doo-Wop, Comedy records, Dance Crazes, Surf, Marvin Gaye wanting to be Frank Sinatra (no, me neither).....you name it, it's here.
If this is your era (and if the 50s and 60s isn't your era - why the hell not!) it is quite simply fantastic.

Haven't stopped playing it for a month.

very nice surprise under this cover , cd box doesnt look as grand as the many Motown re-issues , but it sure features a series of great tracks , some lesser known , like the few gospel tracks , but worth more than the money !!

Not exactly what I had hoped for. I am a Motown anorak and own a lot of early sounds but this one is not so good.
