Product Description

Due to the success of our previous Kingston Trio sets (JASCD566 & JASCD212) we now take a further excursion into the American folk boom of the early '60s with, The Brothers Four. Featured here, as the title suggests, are a plethora of Folk greats including the groups hit singles "Greenfields" and "The Green Leaves of Summer" and many standards and popular songs all given The Brothers Four's stylish touch. In fact across this 2CD set we have crammed no less than five complete albums! Original founding member, Bob Flick still leads a Brothers Four group today and this is your chance to grab yourself the best overview you could find of their first couple of years at the top.

Following the success of the Kingston Trio in the late fifties, rival record labels sent out their talent scouts to hunt for similar groups, hoping to cash in. No rivals ever matched the success of the Kingston Trio, but the Brothers Four did quite well for a while. Their big American hits, Greenfields and Green leaves of summer, came early in their career. Their first five albums, which include both of those hits, are included here in their entirety, complete with a booklet giving brief details of the group's history.

Many years ago, I bought and reviewed Greenfields and Other Gold and I was most impressed. Apart from the hits, very few other tracks on that compilation are to be found here, so they were later recordings. However, that also means that you could buy this one and that compilation and still get your money's worth, Some of the songs are not listed with the familiar titles we all know them by, but I wasn't fooled by that once they started playing, and nor will anybody else who has heard them before.

If you've come here without already owning some music by the Kingston Trio, I recommend that you listen to some of their music first. However, the Brothers Four are not far behind them. This collection shows that they made a great start to their career.

If you like the folk/pop music of the early 60s youwon't be disappointed. Very much in the Kingston Trio style.60 stracks covering 5 original albums can't be bad, Of course the stand-out tracks are their classics Greenfields and Green Leaves of Summer but their is plenty of good stuff here

Following in the footsteps of the Kingston Trio 12 May 2014

Sweet harmonies, good humor, pleasant sounds... 7 Jan. 2015
By William E. Adams - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Back in the early folk revival days of the late '50's I was in my mid-teens. I started with The Kingston Trio and stuck with them as my favorites for years. However, I always liked The Brothers Four, Peter, Paul and Mary, The Chad Mitchell Trio, Jim and Jean, Ian and Sylvia and the solo stars, Joan, Bob, Phil and especially Cisco Houston. In those years, I only actually bought one Brothers LP, but I decided to get this set because it was a great number of tracks for a modest fee. It is great. They are even better than I remembered. This is, to someone my age, great easy listening music for driving or as background to a Scrabble game or two. If you like folk sounds of this era, you won't regret adding this to your shelf.

Going from several very worn LP's of these guys to this beautiful CD is like night and day. If you enjoy this music, this is an excellent product.
