Product Description

Product Description

Green Up! is a compact reference guide to greening your house, from minor improvements such as what paint to use to major ones, such as how to choose and install solar electric panels. Structured in A-Z format, each entry lists an area for greening your house, and then describes the options available, the pros and cons, costs, risks and problems, as well as sources of information and advice. Drawing on his experience of having built his own eco-friendly house, Will Anderson writes from the perspective of having tackled these problems himself, but without assuming any prior technical knowledge on the part of the reader. Among the many topics covered are: * paint, decoration, furniture and carpets * boilers, baths and plumbing * heating, lighting, insulation and energy * gardens, fencing, paving, composting, and * builders, architects and building regulations. Packed with practical, no-nonsense advice, Green Up! offers something for householders in every income bracket.

About the Author

Will Anderson is a freelance researcher, writer and journalist. He has a published academic background in health and social research but now writes with a focus on ecological design: he is a regular contributor to The Independent and Timber Building. His several degrees include one in sustainable development. The building of his highly energy-efficient Tree House in Clapham, London, was the subject of his first book, Diary of an Eco-Builder (Green Books, 2006)

I read this book when planning an extension and refurbishment, and it answered about a million different questions which i'd previously been trying to answer with a very time-consuming and somewhat confusing trawl of the web. Has also empowered me when talking to my shortlist of possible contractors, since they're all full of various bright ideas these days, and this book gave me the confidence to assess their recommendations and remain in control of my decisions. Book also gives good web references for further info. A perfect introduction for the enthusiastic amateur trying to make decisions for an extension or refurbishment.
