Potentially Life Transforming 18 Sept. 2014
By John - Published on
Format: Paperback Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
An excellent, very well written book that could potentially change your health life. Detox, weight-loss, are just the tip of the iceberg. She does a great job of explaining how to organize your own personal, at home green smoothie retreat for the fraction of the cost of going to one of hers. If you wish to experience and more intense and thorough juice fast/ enema cleansing, check out the Gerson Institute or the Optimum Health Institute, both located in San Diego. I can't speak highly enough in support of these green smoothie and or juice cleansing modalities to improve your health.

My only complaint about this book is that it does not contain nearly as many smoothie recipes as her other book, "The Green Smoothie Revolution". They could have easily added another 20 - 30 pages of recipes to flesh this book out. However, that's a minor complaint.

All in all, this book, as well as "The Green Smoothie Revolution" receive my highest of recommendations. Buy it!

Good Book-with a couple of caveats 30 Oct. 2014
By Brian Whistler - Published on
Format: Paperback Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I am indebted to Victoria Boutenko because Her book, Green For Life made me aware of how healthy green smoothies can be. Over the last 5 years, I have been drinking a green smoothie every morning. I have evolved my own recipes so I was curious what Victoria had to say in this new book.

The book is layed out in a straightforward manner. Boutenko makes her case for using greens as a way of getting supernutrition and for detoxing the environmental toxins we are all exposed to. She talks about the need to create a quiet, restful environment while on retreat and emphasizes that organically grown produce is preferred. She encourages people to do the retreat together for mutual support. She feels 7 days is the right amount of time to clean and heal the body to get thru a detox "crisis" and come out the other side feeling great.

After describing the need for a peaceful environment, good quality produce and listing the various items needed, such as a good blender, proper knives etc, Boutenko publishes letters from people who have had perceivable gains as a result of doing the 7 day retreat. The book ends with recipes for green smoothies, soups and even green puddings.

Boutenko was once a vegan, then a vegetarian. She found she had a B12 deficiency, so is now adding raw egg to her smoothies a few times a week. This might turn off hard core vegans, but I found it interesting that she is simply interested in health and is not dogmatic and for her at least, this is something she feels she had to do. My biggest problem with the book is that Boutenko's drinks include a lot of fruit. She contends (without any scientific evidence to support this,) that unripe conventionally grown fruit raises blood sugar whereas ripe organically grown fruit does not. This flies in the face of everything I've read on the subject and certainly is not the experience of the diabetics I have known. Her food pyramid unsurprisingly reflects her philosophy, placing fruit at the bottom, with greens next in line and other organic veggies on top. She mentions occasionally eating organically raised chickens and eggs as well in the top position. Her green smoothies tend to be high in fruits, something that wouldn't work for me. I tend to use mostly fresh greens and certain superfoods, green powders etc in my smoothie with just a handful of berries to balance them out. I tend to disagree with Boutenko on this point so I modify her recipes to reflect my own tastes and beliefs.

That being said, I think the recipes in this book look good and I will definitely be making her green soups and try out the green puddings. (I didn't do the green smoothie retreat yet, but I intend to do so over the Xmas holidays.)

In summary, I think this is a great introduction to green smoothies and what they can do for you. Over the 5 years I have been making them, I have seen improvements in my general health, well being, stamina and libido. I urge anyone who is serious about improving their health to try these. A seven day intensive is a great way to jump in, or that could be something one works towards. Either way, I urge people to pick up this book or Green For Life and start feeling better!

A slim volume with some wonderful recipes for more than just smoothies 21 Sept. 2014
By j-j-j-jinx - Published on
Format: Paperback Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Let me start by first saying I'm a fan of Victoria Boutenko. I own and have used a few of her books and have seen her speak live. Her recipes are consistently good and between her books and a book by the "Green Smoothie Girl" I've made many delicious green smoothies.

This slender volume is about planning your own seven day retreat where you consume nothing but green smoothies. This is not really the same as a juice fast(feast), as you are not removing the fiber and you generally have a lot of stuff like banana, avocado and chia seeds. It starts out talking about all the benefits of green smoothies and the benefits of not putting junk in your body and of eating fresh RIPE fruit, etc. Then, there is info about doing your own retreat. Then, a section of testimonials. Finally, there is a section containing about 50 recipes.

At first, the book is full of citations for everything that is said and I was very impressed! Those peter out, though, and after a while, although the author mostly avoids any kind of "health nut woo woo stuff", it becomes a bit more anecdotal. THEN we get to the testimonials section and of course that is 100% anecdotal.

Finally, the recipes. Even though it looks like a small number of them, they seem well curated and new and it's not just green smoothies but green soups and green "puddings". Finally, there are even some salad and "normal" soup recipes.

The recipes are really where this book shines, and to me the book is worth it just for those, even if you never do a retreat. It also inspires me to actually do a 7-day retreat...I imagine mine near the beach and including yoga. It is maybe a little light on details for, but maybe it's better that way as it's mostly about getting away from everything and drinking green smoothies. Everything else can be customized by you, and there are some details here (like how much compost waste this will cause you to have and how you may want to plan ahead with regard to this) that could end up being very helpful.

If you've never had a green smoothie...Victoria Boutenko's recipes are a very good place to start. Don't be afraid...they are delicious!

Great Ideas and Information on Healing 21 Sept. 2014
By RETSmile - Published on
Format: Paperback Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This is a really great book. I have a few green smoothie books so I thought this would basically be another recipe book for different types of green smoothies. It's much more than that. This is about creating your own environment to do your 7-day detox in a a retreat environment that you create for yourself. I really like this author's outlook on health and she just puts her thoughts out there about current medicine. She maintains that the body can heal itself and she really believes individuals need to make their own decisions about their health - to think independently about it - and I couldn't agree more. This book was a nice surprise with information I haven't considered and new ideas, which I didn't expect. Definite recommend. I've not had my own retreat yet but I will update after I do.

Dandelion wine and other recipes 13 Sept. 2014

Format: Paperback Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Victoria Boutenko gives a complete guide on how to set up your own green smoothie retreat less expensively than those she sets up. The book is full of descriptions of the benefits of such a retreat. The author also gives a sample day-by-day prediction of the participants' progress through the week of the retreat. included are letters from people who have gone through a retreat, and a number of delicious sounding recipes.

Her enthusiastic writing details the health benefits go be derived from green smoothies. Especially noteworthy is the effect these smoothies can have on diabetics. This is a clear and concise book which can make a terrific difference in your health and I certainly recommend the book and the plan she details.
