Product Description

Product Description

Now that we are cool, he said, and regret that we hurt each other, I am not sorry that it happened. I deserved your reproach: a hundred times I have wished to tell you the whole story of my travels and adventures among the savages, and one of the reasons which prevented me was the fear that it would have an unfortunate effect on our friendship. That was precious, and I desired above everything to keep it. But I must think no more about that now. I must think only of how I am to tell you my story. I will begin at a time when I was twenty-three. It was early in life to be in the thick of politics, and in trouble to the extent of having to fly my country to save my liberty, perhaps my life. Every nation, someone remarks, has the government it deserves, and Venezuela certainly has the one it deserves and that suits it best. We call it a republic, not only because it is not one, but also because a thing must have a name; and to have a good name, or a fine name, is very convenient-especially when you want to borrow money. If the Venezuelans, thinly distributed over an area of half a million square miles, mostly illiterate peasants, half-breeds, and indigenes, were educated, intelligent men, zealous only for the public weal, it would be possible for them to have a real republic. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I first read this book around forty-five years ago, and I still have that old paperback copy, as it's one book I cannot give away. I can still close my eyes and remember the atmosphere it evoked when I read it all those years ago. It's truly unique and unforgettable; why no one else seems to know about this book is a very baffling question, as it's a masterpiece.

I think the story was beautifully written. It is unique in its perspective. So few romances are written from a man's point of view. I was utterly engrossed in the story and i have read it many times. It didn't get a 10 because of the ending. It was really good, but.. well... I don't want to give it away. Let's just say it must be a guy thing. I do encourage any fans of romance and fantasy to read it. It is absolutely wonderful.

If someone were to describe the entire feeling that explodes from this book, it would take an entire century. The emotions of the characters were undescribeable. They just poured right off the page. Not all love stories have page after page of adrenaline pumping literature. As the main character chases after his secret admirer, she leads him further and further into her invisible trap of love. Then the secret begins to unfold.
