Many people underestimated Marks abilities as a solo artist simply because Greenman didn't get in the top 10/20, but that to me, doesn't matter. The album has to date, sold just under 1 million copies worldwide and if that isn't an acheivement in itself, then I don't know what is.

As a singer/songwriter myself, if I was to sell 1 million albums worldwide I would be ecstatic, I simply just don't understand why Mark has had so much critisism over this album. Yes it's different to Take That, but what artist wants to continue recording the same style of material that they have done for the past 7 years whilst in a boyband?

Greenman is a brilliant album and the songs have great meanings to them too. I just don't think people have taken the time to give Mark or his solo material a chance and I think they don't know what they are missing.

Buy this album now and you will see what I mean.

Green Man was the first solo release by a member of Take That and was a relative flop, hitting number 33 in the charts (both Robbie and Gary made number 1 with their debut albums). Two years on the follow up is completed but Mark can't find a record company to release it. All of which is rather sad as `Green Man`, despite Robbie's two fine efforts, is still the strongest of the Take That solo albums. What makes the album great for me is that it is not perfect, some of the tracks (`My Love` is the prime example) are experiments that don't quite work. The enthusiasm with which new ideas are tried is so appealing that it covers the few imperfections. Standout tracks? `Clementine` is a great four minute rock pop song and deserved hit single while `Back Pocket And Me`, `Second Hand Wonderland` and `Is That What It's All About` are other personal favourites. But the best track has to be `I Am What I Am`, a emphatic and at times scornful statement of intent that reminds me of Bob Dylan's `Idiot Wind` (which incidentally can be found on another of my favourite albums). As a rule, pretty faces from lightweight pop groups do not mature into serious talent. Mark Owen is a remarkable exception. So if you have dismissed him in the way I have described above, buy this album. It may just inspire you to change your mind.

After the demise of the internationally successful boy-band Take That, one would figure it was just a matter of time before the band's prettiest boy Mark Owen went solo. Although I initially didn't like this album, after a few listens some of the songs grew on me.

The album spawned the singles "Clementine", "Child" and "I Am What I Am", but notably the best tracks are one that weren't singles. In my opinion, one of the albums best moments is the psychedelicly tinged "Second Hand Wonderland". This song is definitely Markie's finest hour and proves that he has the ability to pen a good lyric. Other good songs here are "Ask Him To", "My Love" and the singles "Clementine" and "Child".

Would I recommend this album? Well, yes, but I would first warn that if you are expecting him to sound anything like his former band or former band mates, BEWARE!! This album is more adult contemporary than the pop styling of Take That, Robbie Williams, or Gary Barlow. Then again, one only has to remember that Markie's Take That contributions ("Babe", "The Day After Tomorrow") really weren't typical Take That material either. Markie's style is more that of an early Andy Gibb than of his former band/band mates.
