Book Description

1 Nov 2010
Everyone knows they need to eat more fruits and vegetables, but even consuming the minimum FDA-recommended five servings a day can be challenging. In Green for Life, raw foods pioneer Victoria Boutenko presents an overlooked powerhouse of nutrition in this equation: greens. For their bounty of minerals and nutrients, greens exceed other vegetables in value. Green for Life details the immense health benefits of greens and suggests an easy way to consume them in sufficient quantities: the green smoothie. This quick, simple drink benefits everyone, regardless of lifestyle, diet, or environment. Green smoothies eliminate toxins, correct nutritional deficiencies, and are delicious.

Green for Life includes the latest information on the abundance of protein in greens, the benefits of fiber, the role of greens in homeostasis, the significance of stomach acid, how greens make the body more alkaline, the healing power of chlorophyll, and more. Also included are the results of a pilot study demonstrating the effectiveness of adding just one quart of green smoothies a day to one’s diet, without changing anything else in dietary intake. Green smoothie testimonials and recipes give readers confidence and motivation in exploring green smoothies for themselves. Offering more in-depth nutritional and experiential information than Boutenko’s recently released Green Smoothie Revolution, Green for Life makes an ideal companion piece to its recipe-rich successor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Inspirational! 15 Mar 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was attracted to read this book as over the last few months I have been reading about people eating a raw food diet. I am not yet on the diet, but have been thinking about trying it. I have read mainly good, but a small amount of negative stories of how people have found the diet. I think this book explains brilliantly what our diet should approximately be like. That of chimpanzees of course! It all makes sense. We have almost the same DNA as them, so why shouldn't we eat like them? Victoria conducted a lot of research into the chimps' diets and found that they eat a high percentage of greens - i.e. dark green vegetables. She found that her and her family's diet was lacking in greens despite them already being on a raw food diet, so they started to have green smoothies daily. The family noticed huge improvements in their health, and have continued to drink them everyday since. She decided to do a study of volunteers from a town who drank her green smoothies daily for 30 days - some of them on a standard cooked diet. It seems that most of them found huge health improvements including their general energy levels and quality of sleep. This is a truly inspirational book and has personally got me thinking that I will give eating raw foods a go, firstly by drinking a green smoothie a day. I would to like hear how other people's views too.

5.0 out of 5 stars The way to healthy living 28 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
I used to do a lot of juicing in the past but it is very time consuming and really messy. My problem is over since I got Green for Life. Making smoothies is a great alternative to juicing. It is much faster, less messy, and you also get some fiber in addition to juice. In addition to great recipes for making smoothies the book is also a good source of information about proper nutrition, the importance of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and much more. Get this book!! Another great volume that you may not miss is Can We Live 150 Years. These two books together make a perfect gift of showing the way to healthy living just for anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book! Inspirational reading. 9 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This book is completely brilliant, well written and simple to understand and easy to follow. I love everything by Victora Boutenko anyway because she's so inspirational :-) ... If you haven't watched any of her DVDs, I highly recommend you do so.

It would surprise me if anyone reads this book completely and then doesn't adopt a green smoothie a day attitude! They really DO taste great and make you feel and look great!

Although I am high raw, this book would also be extremely useful for non raws and non vegans who want to improve their diet. A litre (3 glasses) of green smoothies would cover most of an adults nutritional needs for a day. I have 2 large glasses for breakfast and a glass mid afternoon - very energising. I am totally hooked!

Best bit is, they are so easy to make and don't cost much to create. This is the best health insurance for my money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Green smoothies for life yes please! 10 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had recently decided to be vegetarian, I was having fish and poultry in my diet but felt that I didn't want to include any meat in my diet anymore. That is how I came across this book as I was also interested in Raw Food for more available nutrients.

Wow.
This book is just what I was looking for at this time. I was concerned about how I would get enough variety of protien. Well look no further and you get protien and much much more.

I very much enjoyed reading about Victoria's journey with her family with Raw Food and eventually discovering the 'Green Smoothie'. The information regarding nutritional values of different dark greens and the benefits of buying organic where invaluable for me as a beginner. The discovery of the chimpanzee diet in comparisson to human diet was really interesting and makes sense. Also I found the testimonial's of interest as I could identify with some symptoms that others have experienced. I find it very inspiring.

And how have I found the 'Green Smoothies'...
Well, delicious! I love them and after only a few days I was already set in a routine of what time I had them and could not wait. I am drawn to more Raw Food too and this enables me to eat mostly Raw at lunch time and then I have a vegetarian cooked evening meal...however I am starting to desire Raw then too! I feel great, a little bloated at times but that passes. They are soooo filling and satisfying! Green Smoothies will be a daily treat from now on!

I feel so grateful to have found this book and thank Victoria for writing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 22 Jun 2009
By Silky
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I loved this book. I actually bought it by mistake when I was buying some recipe books so it took me some time to get around to reading it. This convinced me to buy the vitamix and I have been drinking green smoothies everyday since. It really is a fascinating book. I am not a vegetarian and certainly not a raw foodist. I dont intend becoming either anytime soon, however this book has persuaded me to start drinking green smoothies which has had a profound effect. No hayfever for starters...
