4.0 out of 5 stars Green vs Yellow 30 Jun 2011
The release of the live action Green Lantern has prompted an overdue region two dvd release for an animated film based on the character that came out a short while back in the states.

For the uninitiated: Green Lantern is a long established superhero title from DC comics. Hal Jordan is a brash test pilot. When dying alien Abin Sur crash lands on Earth the green ring he wears seeks Hal out. To become Abin's replacement in the Green Lantern Corps. An elite interstellar peacekeeping force put together by an immortal race of aliens called the guardians of the universe. Their purpose: to keep order. Their power: comes from the green rings which are powered by will. Anything you want them to create using their green energy will happen. It's all down to the wearer's willpower.

Hal is taken under the wing of Sinestro, one of the most highly regarded of the corps. As they hunt for the being who killed Abin Sur it becomes apparent that Sinestro has an agenda of his own. And thus Hal has to prove himself worthy of being a Green Lantern rather quickly. Because the fate of the universe is stake.

This only runs for seventy five minutes and thus the origin stuff is rushed through rather quickly at the start. Those not familiar with the comic may struggle to keep up unless they keep their wits about them.

The pacing also means it doesn't have time to add much depth to the characters. With the exception of Sinestro. Victor Garber delivers an excellent voice performance making him a fully rounded villain with very believable motivations.

The animation does look a bit cheap at times in the interstellar and alien world scenes and could on occasion do with more detail. Some things are computer generated and they do stand out against it slightly awkwardly.

4.0 out of 5 stars well done 6 Mar 2010
By falcon
i thought this was a very well done animated's the origin story of how Hal Jordan became a Green Lantern.i have no idea how close it is to the original comic book origin.but i do knew,i loved the story.i thought it flowed very well, with a good mixture of action and drama.i thought the voice acting was, they seemed to have a good script to work with.i found the dialogue to be really good,as well.none of the usual cheese we tend to see in many animated or even live action movies.i think this particular animated film is as good as any of the recent spate of releases by both Marvel and DC,and it's certainly as entertaining.for me,Green Lantern:First Flight is a 4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars Cosmic, man 30 Dec 2009
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I actually bought a new DVD player in order to be able to watch this(it's Region 1 so I needed a player which could be converted to multi-region). It was worth every penny - I've already watched it about four times. The graphics are stunning, the voice cast is excellent, and, most importantly, it's a great story. Too often in this kind of movie(and I include live-action superhero films) the story takes second place to the action or special effects - this is not the case with First Flight: there's plenty of action and special effects, but they serve a great storyline which makes sense, has drama, suspense and humour. If the live-action Green Lantern film ever gets made, I hope it uses this movie as a model.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shine a Light 2 Aug 2012
After watching `The Green Lantern' live action film, I felt like I needed a superhero palette cleanser and what better way to do this than watch a Green Lantern feature length cartoon? In this case `Green Lantern: First Flight'. Like with the Ryan Reynolds' starring film, `First Flight' is the origins of the Hal Jordon's Lantern, but after the initial set up the two films separate. `First Flight' surrounds the space based elements of the character and accelerates the decline of one of the noble Green Lanterns (can you guess which one?)

Whilst the live action interpretation was somewhat of a box office and review flop, the cartoon has a lot more going for it (although not as many people will see it). The dynamic between Hal and the other Green Lanterns is explored a lot further with the likes of Kilowog and Sinestro getting a lot to do. Sinestro in particular is a very interesting character who rules the people of his sector with an iron fist for their own good. With the space setting, the action is also more impressive - chase scenes through alien cities and during warps. The story itself is also stronger than the film with real pathos as Will buckles under the power of Fear.

There are issues with the cartoon, especially with the animation itself. As a straight to DVD feature it does not have the budget of a cinema release and you can tell with the lack of frame rate and limited use of backgrounds. The voice acting is also a little dubious with lesser known actors not making up with talent for what they lack in fame. Despite some elements of `First Flight' falling flat there is no doubting that the story works far better than the live action movie. For this reason I would rather watch a straight to DVD version of Hal Jordon's Green Lantern origins, than a $100+ movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars A run of the mill origin story 31 Oct 2011
The title I gave this review - "A run of the mill origin story" - pretty much sums up my take.

Our tale begins with an alien green lantern crash-landing on Earth. He dies shortly thereafter, but not before giving his power-ring to Hal Jordan: the hero of the piece, and the character all true fanboys will recognize as THE definitive green lantern.

This movie does differ from most other superhero origin stories in that the part where the hero actually gains superpowers is dispensed with very quickly. The focus is on the hero's first adventure - the one where he earns his spurs as a superhero. Hence the title "First Flight". But in all other respects this piece is pretty formulaic. There are a couple of twists here and there, but nothing major. The production values and the voice acting are all up to the exceptionally high standards that we've come to expect from DC's animated offerings. Otherwise...

A lot of the animated DC stuff Bruce Timm has released over the years - in particular I'm thinking of Justice League Unlimited and Batman - Mask of the Phantasm - has had real depth; far beyond what most people expect from the superhero genre. This one just doesn't. Don't get me wrong: there's nothing especially bad about this movie. It's more that there's nothing that really stands out as especially good about it either.

The up side is, if you're after a rocket-fueled, high powered action flick, this movie delivers in spades. What you see is what you get, and what we get is a grand, galactic-scale adventure.
